Default File Groups/fields of interest for gnutella?

There was once a feature, I think it was in LW, where you could put in, what intersts you, to get into gnutella groups (subnetlike, but not closed).

Does this still exist somewhere, or did it go extinct?

I think it is a pretty neat feature, because the network optimizes itself around the users, when you use that. There is already vendor preferencing, why not introduce group-preferencing?

I'm using Acquisition, so I doN't know, if this is already implemented, or reimplemented anywhere.

Hello!

That function was called Community and It was dropped very early already in version 1.8C it was gone. It never really worked so I dont think we will see such a function again.

GWebcache 2 supports clustering by keywords (for instance groups like MP3, Videos etc). Unfortunately almost no clients support it.

I have nearly only Limewire and Acquisition connections, when I'm online, so I think Vendor preferencing works quite well, so Community preferencing could also work, especially since the UPs would also have a Community string.

Some more info on that in the following message in the acquisition board:

hi arne

the Myster network had a similar idea when I checked it out a few months ago. I like the idea of a way to narrow a search, and I think the developers are working on "met-data" searches. If you want, I could look up the links for you on the limewire.org developers mailing lists.

hi stief,

Myster does something else, because it just puts the files into cathegories (more exactly: The user has to do it) and searches only in the cathegory, which the User selects.

Every one of those cathegories optimizes its own hostlist independently.

In Gnutella something more simple would be possible: Being closer to those with the same interests.

If your UP connects mostly to UPs with similar interest, you are more likely to find interesting files, because you reach those hosts more easily.

hi arne
Perhaps the best solution is good global searching, which the developers are truly developing. If I've read the dev mailing list correctly, international searching is a hot item which should move LW closer to your idea.

No, it isn't an overly hot thing for me. Sure it will be great, when I can search gnutella for äs, but then I don't speak japanese, so much of the benefit misses me.

don't misunderstand this: I think it is good, that Gnutella gets more and more global, but that isn't my first priority, when I click search.

First off, I want to find and download my files, and global searching won't speed that up.

Fields of Interest would do the job. I think, and they wouldn't be too hard to implement, I'd assume.

A simple firststart dialog, what interests one has, and a preferences tab would suffice for the UI.

I hope it reappears soon, because I think, that the network is fit for it now.
