Browser based GUI onto Gnutella protocol

Does anyone know if it is possible to develop browser-based interfaces onto Gnutella functionality?

What exactly do you mean by browser-based interfaces?

Access to the Gnutella-Network via a Browser needs a Program, which can be controlled via a http-interface (might be a good deal of work, but no more than for any other p2p-app).

If you mean: Implementing Gnutella in a browser:
Gnutella is a kind of search engine. You could implement a Gnutella search in a browser, by making it connect to the Gnutella-Network at startup. A search could simply result in a page, which lists the results. Downloads in Gnutella work via an only slightly modified get-request, and there are quite some free (and GPLled) Gnutella-Programs, some in Java, some in C:

If you mean "Websites, which can be hosted in Gnutella":
Shareaza developed "collections", which are asically Websites, for which only a "*.collection" file gets downloaded, which is a zip including an xml-file, in which you can find magnet-links to all files which should be on that website. your client then downloads the files into the zip-file.

To distribute such a website, you need only to provide a source for the zip-archive with the xml-file, all other files can be downloaded via p2p (and even that initial zip could be served via p2p-networks).

Did it answer your question, or did you mean something else, which I didnt quite grasp?

On this note, I'm working on just that for LimeWire/FrostWire and it should be done within the week. :)

Might it be possible to also port it to Phex? ( http://phex.org ) (it is also Java and GPL).

I'm assuming Phex is completely different (unless it is a fork of LimeWire?), so yes it can be done but it would take a while. Once I have completed the mod for LW/FW and have added all the functionality that I deem el neato, I'll take a looksy at the Phex project. ;)

Porting the web-interface will most probably not be practical because of the different core functionality and the different ways of accessing certain data.

You could however reuse some of the code when writing a web interface for Phex.

That's what I had assumed. The code I could reuse would be the actual HTTP daemon side of things, which is fact less than 100 lines. :p

You should try program called MLDONKEY.
It is a big beast that support gnutella, overnet, edonkey and torrent p2p networks.

Its support 3 gui:
- telnet gui [text mode]
- browser gui
- "normal" gui [slow]


Its avalible to linux, windoze, solaris, beos etc...
Its good program but preformance is poor.
