We must fight back To answer the person who said that we shouldn't do anything about it and we shouldn't tell him how to run his life: If you don't want to join us who would like to fight such behaviour on Gnutella network, then step aside and don't tell us how to run our lives or how to behave. In addition to other measures, I suggest that each one of us should check the files that they have downloded and 'clean' them regularly. |

Another danger of mis-labeling Another reason not to mis-label is so you don't accidentally get caught in vigilante reprisals yourself. Just recently there's been a new email virus that looks for suspiciously named files and sends a report to one of a number of law enforcement agencies. ;-) Kinda a fun idea, but although a filename doesn't prove anything, you really don't want to be in the position of having to prove you're *not* a child pornographer! Also you don't want to download this stuff even accidentally. In the USA, just having the stuff on your HD is enough to get you sent to prison, and I doubt the procecution or jury will care how it got there. Many gnutella clients allow you to filter search results that have certain keywords. I'll usually make a list to filter out results with pre-teen, preteen, lolita etc. I don't want to see this stuff let alone accidentally download any of it (which in some clients is all to easy to do - especially when the terms are hidden in very long filenames). |

Unless those files are showing up in large numbers on your HD, I can't imagine that being a reason to be busted because you'd have to be blind not to see your HD is running out of memory & that's not exactly something you're not going to notice-on the other hand, if those files are showing up enmass & it's obvious that you're one sick MF, then you Should be busted! It's what you deserve! I really hate those words: "do nothing" |

sad state of affairs when you can't use the net for porn I personally think the internet has reached the state where you can no longer safely use it for porn. There is too much corrupting stuff out there. Even on the most wholesome www sites, there are usually schoolgirl and/or teen categories. (OK, they aren't real schoolgirls or teens, but how many girls do you meet who dress as schoolgirls and use a teddybear as a sex toy?) You pays your money you takes your chances. However, I think it would be nice and somewhat effective to have clients which allow filtering of user-defined strings (could be in a config file easy to download and distribute) which drop any passing search for said content, instead of passing it on (or replying;-). If enough users get these filters, then it would become very hard to search for this stuff without making a seperate network. Sure, they will start to use the word 'teen' instead of 'preteen' - they already do. You take a risk to download any jpg (or mpg?), as far as I can tell. Stick to the mp3s ;-) Perhaps we could kindly request the paedos to encrypt their files? It would be better for everyone! Then they can use the extension .pgp or something, and we won't find the files when we search for .jpg. |

For a while I did post a tremendously horrible picture of a disfigured man, under a title containing what I thought were keywords used by pedophiles. So that's my suggestion. I don't dare do anything of the sort these days by fear of seeing the police arrive here, thinking I'm actually sharing kiddie porn... (I got the picture in question on rotten.com. -I'd browsed my way there after a friend's suggestion. AND I REGRETTED BADLY ! That little trip even kind of scared my off the internet for a few days. Nevertheless, I managed to save the one picture, thinking it could come in handy if ever I hated someone reeeaaallllll bad. And pedophiles are pretty much in that category.) Of course I don't think they would go after you if you had only one picture, but if you had thousands of them, they would... they mostly try to catch the people who make/distribute for profit the stuff, though. Because without the people who make money off it, it wouldn't exist at all... Nobody creates content just to share it on P2P networks. Actually a clever programmer could create a program that would monitor gnutella queries for childporn activity, then record the date/time/IP. The user could then complain to the pervert's ISP and probably get them banned. Of course this sort of vigilante justice is treading a dangerous path... I think the "middle road" of merley refusing to propagate the childporn queries is the best solution. |
