Where do I start?

Is there a webpage that explains how to start downloading & uploading music?

Thanks

Morgwen July 8th, 2002 06:52 PM

You should download a client like Shareaza, Gnucleus, Xolox etc.

Some of these clients have help files or faqs, if you canīt get them to start you can come back and ask here...

I am using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with a p3 processor with 256mb ram 16GB HD at work & Windows 95 p1 with 48mb ram & 2GB HD at home.

What is a client? And what client would work with the systems that I described.

Thanks

You need a client to access to the net...

http://www.zeropaid.com/php/top_prog...where_type=win

All windows clients should work.

Morgwen, thanks but the link you supplied http://www.zeropaid.com/php/top_prog...where_type=win

has over 52 programs (clients) listed which one should I try? Should I just download the first one & see if it works with Gnetella?

Morgwen July 8th, 2002 07:29 PM

Yes Shareaza is a Gnutella client...

they say that somewhere...

perhaps this link is easier:

http://www.gnutelliums.com/

Note that Shareaza isnīt displayed on this page yet, but is sure a try worth!

Note:

If you download Limewire or bearshare, donīt install any of the third party stuff...

Try this page.
All of these clients connect to the Gnutella network. Basically, just look at the screenshots and the description, find one that looks good, download it and try it out. If you don't like it, try another one. Whatever you download, though, don't download Morpheus. It's full of spyware, and it has lots of bugs which are bad for the network. The 3 best clients, IMO, are Bearshare, Gnucleus, and Limewire. Shareaza is also good, but it's aimed towards more experienced users.

Thank you,

I downloaded Shareaza & searched for Guns N Roses it came up with over 1000 listings, but when I clicked on a couple to download, it looked like it was starting to work but than nothing happened, it said queued (1 source) than it changed its status to (No sources) Progress is 0% and Speed is Nil. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Could it be than Windows NT isn't compatible with Shareaza?

Thanks

When I clicked on a song to download with 1 source I doesn't work but when I clicked on a song with 22 sources it started downloading but it is downloading 4 copies of the song from 4 different hosts. Should I close all but the fastest download?

I_am_New_to_This July 8th, 2002 07:47 PM

One of the songs completed downloading? How do I save it to my hard drive? I right licked on the song and pressed Preview Open & it began to play but I want to save it on my hard drive. Do you know where these files are downloaded to (which directory) in my computer?

Thanks

This is because you won't be able to get through to every source. You want to download the songs with the most sources, so:
1) You have a better chance of getting your file, and
2) The songs with the most sources are usually the songs of the best quality.

It's not download 4 copies. It's downloading 1 copy, but to speed things up, it's getting it from 4 different sources. When the download's done, it will splice all the pieces together and you'll have your file.

It is saved to your hard drive. You selected the download directory during setup. This is the directory where all the files are saved after you download them. I'm not sure what the default download directory for Shareaza is, but it's probably something like "C:\Program Files\Shareaza\Downloads". This is assuming you didn't change it to something else during setup.

Thank you for your help, There is a way to transfer the songs to a CDR-W disc which can be played in your CD player right? This has been very popular the last couple years and I decided to get my feet wet (so to speak) tonight and hope to learn more about this file sharing sometime soon.

Thank you again

You are correct - that is exactly where the default is.

Yes, If you don't already have it get a copy of Roxio Easy CD Creator.

If you have a CD-RW it should already have come with a program to convert those mp3s to an audio CD.

Wav or MP3 files on your CDs....

Here is a tip for you (I_am_New_to_This). :)
If you burning your own CDs, 1 CD can hold between 10 - 21-wav files but if you burning MP3 file 1 CD can hold up to 100 - 130-MP3 files (more if you have DVD burner, up to 1000 file on 1 DVD) and you computer can play them directly from the CD, you save space on your computer. And many DVD payer can play them too, so you can play your MP3 files on your stereo at home. :)
Good Luck!! :D
