Default Protocol Question

I am trying to write a simple client. The "host caches" apparently follow a different protocol than other servents (at least it doesn't seem to handle ping packets well). Is this protocol documented at all?

I'm aware that source code to some of the functional clients is available but I would rather avoid reading all that code.

thanks
