Yes it is true that it is not entirely true in 100% of the cases but this bug that you are mentioning I have only encountered abot twice. So it is a very small problem compared to the cheaters out there. I actually once just for the fun of it let a 0KB/s download stay in my download area for 5 days and the file was just 345KB in size and yeat it took it 5 days to download. Incredible how slow that one must have downloaded lets see:

5 days=120 hours

120H*3600=432000 seconds

345KB/432000= 0.000798KB/sec

What version of Shareaza are you using?

My advice would be to use the latest version of LimeWire.

You say that you have set Shareaza to random select ports to listen to.

My advice would be to select a steady port. Either port 6346, 6347 or 6355 which are standard ports used on Gnutella.

If you are using a Firewall either a software one or a hardware one(NAT router) you must then select those ports above to be open and allowed for communication both uppstream and downstream.

Lets perform this test:

Mail me at netfox100@hotmail.com

In the mail give me your current IP address and a name of a file that you are sharing.

I will then try to download that file from you and see what kind of speeds I am getting and then report back to you.

figured it out... apparently through my AT&T cable connection I can't accept incoming connections on port 4662. this is what is stopping me from downloading. i guess sometimes (very seldom) i can connect through port 80 and download a little bit but not enough to get anything accomplished. fasttrack clients like kazaa lite let me set my port to 80 and i can download very well that way so i guess i'll just have to give up on the gnutella clients.

i wasn't able to find any information on this on at&t's support pages. anyone know of anything i can do? any other at&t users out there that know which port i should use?

6346 is pretty much the standard Gnutella port, although you can use whatever you want.

Sounds like you might want to set up port forwarding on your router.

By changing to port 6346, 6347 or 6355 and then configure your FireWall or Router to allow communications over those ports you will probably be able to use Gnutella whitout a problem if your ISP allow it.

However you could be unlucky and your ISP may block Gnutella traffic. But the fact that you are able to connect at all and search for stuff and occassionally download at slow speeds indicates that your ISP may be using a packet analysing tool such as Packet Hound from Palisade Systems which will slow downloads to a crawl to conserve bandwidth from your ISP's point of view and also after a certain amount of time even cut the download off completely after it had found out it was Gnutella traffic.
