Do you share or act as an ultrapeer?

Many people rant bitc h around about Gnutella, that you can't find anything and if you do, you won't be able to download it because you get into a long long queue.

The Gnutella Protocol offers the technology to allow fast and precise searching and also fast downloading and distribution, for me the problem seems to be on the lack of users willing to share either their files or their bandwidth.

So the question: Do you share or act as an Ultrapeer?

stief August 25th, 2003 09:36 AM

Good question!
both--when I can. Still, if I have to choose between one or the other (bandwidth constraints), which do you think helps the network more? Sharing or being an UP?

trap_jaw4 August 25th, 2003 10:22 AM

With the next version you should be able to do both because it should reduce the upload speed automatically when you become an ultrapeer.

I have an old pc, and it locks up when any client uses too much bandwith. I do share all my files though.

UltraPeer

Engaging ultrapeer caused massive, heavy, relentless traffic when monitored; then connection went down. I'm on DSL. It also slowed MY searches. Believe me, I've twiddled with all the controls/parameter/settings possible, and it's just better to have Ultrapeer disabled WHILE YOU ARE LOOKING YOURSELF. Often, however, I will engage ultrapeer for other people's benefit, for as long as it holds and connection stays. I have not lost connection with Ultrapper disabled.

That's because you don't need to be an ultrapeer to connect to the network. However, without them the network would not function efficiently.

the question should of read

Do you share

Freeload

ultrapeer

share and up

lime needs a way to get rid of freeloaders. And not just on personal uploads.

share or get booted. beacause thier not helping the network in any form except clogging it up!

PaulLimewireFan2003 October 15th, 2003 03:56 PM

Yes, I agree. Brilliant. Even if it required sharing of say, 20-30 files, that would (or should) qualify. I have tested sharing my folder, then doing a search for what I was sharing (coded entries to see if it's me). I found sharing going on with files people got from me FOR ABOUT ONE DAY, possibly, 2 -- then nothing. They had removed from the network. I have a .txt note to shariers in my shared folder but frankly have removed them if no one will share them. I rotate what's in there twice per week, and will resume sharing about 250 files -- but you are absolutely right -- freeloaders should be purged!!

AaronWalkhouse July 28th, 2006 06:03 AM

Bad idea. The one big reason gnutella is so successful and has the
widest variety of files is because it welcomes all people even if they don't
have files to share. Attempting to force people to share something, anything,
always results in either them sharing millions of junk files from a Windows or
program folder or they end up sharing a small collection of what everyone else
already has shared.

The amount of people on the network with nothing to share has steadily
dropped over the years to a stable level of about 12%, and that's perfectly
healthy for the network on the whole
. Any selfish attempt to force the
percentage lower will just drive people away, doing more harm than good.

If you want a totalitarian network which ends up forcing nearly everyone into
copyright infringement then go to something like DC or one of those private
torrent trackers that think they're so kewl and leave the rest of us to share
in perfect freedom
.

I do both

But like Stief it doesn't work very well to do both at the same time. I notice a great drop in how many uploads I get per session when acting as an UltraPeer

BTW I really wish that they would get that freeloaderfilter working. Then the people using Limewire can choose if Freeloaders are allowed RARELY (meaning people who share get priviledge in the queue). They get first the freeloader gets second

jay173 July 30th, 2006 11:44 PM

i think its always best to have as many ultrapeers as possible and file sharers but the people that only download or dont leave there limewire up make it kind of unfare slowing down the network for us and not helping it, they should make it so you have to be an ultrapeer if you dont have pro

birdy July 31st, 2006 12:21 AM

LW chooses it's ultrapeers. Not much point forcing someone to be an ultrapeer if they have a slow connection... that's not going to speed things up!

I have a bit of a moral dilemma with this whole sharing/ultrapeer issue.I share my files but when i download something i burn it to cd or dvd so i can watch it/listen to it away from the computer. To save space on the hard drive i delete the more popular ones because it would make very little diffrence if i had a song that another 15 people had.But a few months ago i was downloading a certain tv series which had over 20 episodes and left them all on there to share even tho it nearly filled my hard drive because they where from America and during the daytime here most of the people where either offline or not sharing so i left it like that for a week and had an incredible ammount of hits [around 200] and people where constantly downloading it after a week i decided to burn the files to dvd and watch them on something bigger than a s****y 14inch monitor then i deleted them and cleaned my hard drive. If i download a really obscure song [the young marble giants being a typical example] i leave it on my shared and let other people download it.
Same with my rare/obscure videos i have left them on because they are obscure and not many people will search for them but for a fan of this musician the videos are a goldmine. So it's personal choice really share the hard to find stuff and delete the others.Same with uploading i recomend put rare stuff on and leave the chart stuff where it is.

@AaronWalkhouse: Where did you get the stats from, taht only 12% of users in Gnutella are Freeloaders? Do you have a source for other similarly interesting stats?

newbee2 September 9th, 2006 02:42 PM

I have ultrapeer setting enabled, I have bandspeed enough,LW is running for long periods, why am i not an ultrapeer? Presumably being an ultrapeer helps with search results? I have upload setting at 35 KB is this not enough?
Please explain what's missing ! apart from my total lack of expierience with LW!!

Is there a firewall icon in front of the globe in bottom left corner?

If there is then you can not become one until it's fixed

newbee2 September 13th, 2006 03:11 PM

Hi, Thanks for reply, no there is no firewall icon or firewall blocking problems, ultrapeer is not disabled, should this happen automatically ? doesn't seem to, or i cant tell !

Also thanks for tips forum rules, google etc, MOST usefull, still havnt found my answer, will continue looking! onward and upward!!

Hey, folks! I do both and I haven't encountered the dropped connection problems that some may have encountered. Perhaps I'm just a free spirit or just downright naive, I share whatever I've got, it defeats the purpose of the network not to do so, to me.

newbee2 September 18th, 2006 03:47 AM

Thanks Peach!
Yup, i share all,and ''stay connected'' Quite agree if you cant get,let them come, after all ''the hardest thing to give away is kindness,it keeps coming back'' Still interested in being an Ultrapeer tho'

Limewire only makes you an UltraPeer if it notices that the network needs UltraPeers. Also 35 Upspeed isn't that fast. In the newer versions of Limewire, the programme shields UPs from searches for things found elsewhere.

You do get more results in UP mode, but you also get more bad results, because of the larger number of connections. Run PeerGuardian, it helps a bit, but only against bad IPs connecting directly to you. You can still connect to people that aren't running PG and therefore connect to the bad IPs.

If you have good speed and have been up n' runnin' for a long time, then you can just disconnect and reconnect, and it should connect as one. May take a few tries though.

P.S. I didn't revive a really old thread. Someone voted and it went straight to the top.

Grandpa February 4th, 2007 10:23 AM

I share and have UP enabled but LW very rarely connects as a UP I think the last time was 6 or so months ago. My ISP limits UL bandwidth which may have something to do With LimeWire not connecting as a UP.
