![]() My firewall is getting hit with 1000's of attempts at port 6346 for the last day or so. Is this just flakey software that refuses to notify itself when it gets no response - or - has a virus attacked the gnutella world? I've never used gnutella! |

![]() no it's just junk software written by a bunch of amatuers. after some research (read that wasting my time on someone elses problem), i see that the whole architecture of p2p file sharing is based on a stupid concept that has been intrusive to non-users for years now. i call a thousand of so hits an hour a DoS attack, not playful file sharing. if p2p users can't control their actions through the software they are using then they should be held accountable! i'm really suprised that an organization, with such holier-than-thou attitudes as GNU has, would put it's name on this crappy software concept. |

![]() >1st: Gnutella hasn't anything to do with GNU That explains why it is REAL sh*t! I didn't want to waste any more of my time investigating - I figuered someone would take the bait. So it's just that the creators of this junk software tried to lend legitimacy to their crap by giving it a trendy name >2nd: Gnutella kicks your *** This is a real stupid comment. Gnutella just hogs bandwidth with pathetic software that should not be allowed to function in such a selfserving, internet community harming way. I have nothing against p2p file sharing, regardless of what is being shared, but I am against the concept that I (and many, many others it seems) have to log thousands of messages to 3 log files because someone designed a **** poor pile of architecture and software that forces non-participants to waste their time dealing with their JUNK! Not to mention the fact that ISPs everywhere are having to respond to users, who may not have the ability or the time to research, who think they are being attacked. It's just another greedy way of cost-shifting in the true capitalistic sense. "I get my music for free, and **** those people who have to deal with my droppings". >3rd: Thank you You'll thank me more as the outrage of the many people falling victum to this crap becomes more and more visible due to my posts in key places. As firewalls and people concerned with security see their problems increased by this stupid software, you'll see your ability to do p2p diminished and your ISPs turning you off due to DoS attack complaints! ![]() Thanks Peerless! I didn't expect to get much respect from people who would frequent this forum, but I felt it was worth posting anyway to let Gnutella users become aware of the hostile nature of some of the flakey software that they use. The port doesn't even exist on my internet connection machine, and it is <well> protected. Perhaps I could do something to stop the nonsense, but is it really my responsibility? And does anything I do eliminate the root cause for the many other people who suffer from this intrusion? No to both. I have found one of the most annoying offenders at a Navy housing center in the hills of Japan to whose security I have sent an email about their DOS attack. The other bad one is at bellsouth.rr.com, and I have sent a similar email to their abuse team. I don't pretend, nor do I want, to become an expert in the inside of p2p file sharing, but I do know the tools and the resources to kick in to bring a greater public scrutiny to bear on this bad software construct and punish abusers of others internet rights. Trite one liners from moderators will only fuel this effort. Paradog decided that, rather than reveal in this forum his statements in other forums about how hard he has tried to write a Gnutella client, he would offer silliness. Kath is equally off the wall with triteness and non-content! |
