stief has a spectacular aura about
Default Lunar Eclipse Sharing

a fellow made a .wmv of the lunar eclipse last Wednesday, and posted via slashdot that he's sharing it on gnutella. http://science.slashdot.org/science/.../0032216.shtml

Most of the posters decided to share it with a torrent

I found and shared it on gnutella ("LunarEclipse-10-2004.wmv"), and it downloaded at ~100KB/s

So, isn't gnutella just as good, if not better, for sharing than the torrent network?

I'd post the magnet, but don't want to upset the mods

I downloaded it too at 100KB/s (mostly from Stief ). WMP sucks on mac. I wasn't able to check the video at real speed with it as it skipped 80% of frames. VLC and mplayer weren't able to view the clip. Who is the idiot that encoded the video in MS format? At least, I saw a part of the eclipse with my eyes...

Ciao

Yeah--the video is pretty poor, and the original poster was flamed pretty hard for the quality and format. I detest .wmv! Too bad a decent file wasn't used to test the slashdot effect with gnutella.

However, it was interesting to see how he started by choosing gnutella, but even though the slashdot crowd jumped to torrents, the gnutella protocol worked just as well from what I could see.

On the monitor page, I quickly saw many uploads to non-LW clients , esp GTK's, so it's interesting that you got it mostly from me

et voilà--I'm seeing the Locations in the Library for the file fluctuating between 103 and 82--it's quite varied!
