That sounds more like superstition than caution. Just defrag the drive and that
will scrub the last whiff of the picture out of there.

Gununit1040 July 18th, 2006 02:11 AM

now one quick question, if you reformat your hard drive doesnt that get rid of everything? including KP? or porn in general?

AaronWalkhouse July 18th, 2006 04:11 AM

Not always. Sometimes a format just resets the disk structure and scans for
obvious errors without actually overwriting and testing every sector.

Stratiotes July 18th, 2006 07:42 PM

I've faced this problem as well. I qued some videos the other night and later watched them to find that some were KP. I deleted them. Then I previewed some of those still in que and deleted some more that were iffy.

I thought I was good, then I realized about a week later that I forgot to delete the file fragments or whatever. However, I don't even share my files, nor do I share file fragments, so do I have anything to worry about?

I also didn't know that a regular delete wasn't secure. So I guess my HD still has fragments on it. This sucks. I think I'm fixing to uninstall limewire. Too much trouble.

AaronWalkhouse July 18th, 2006 07:54 PM

A defrag will reliably scrub the remains. If you have Norton's software you
can set Speed disk to run every night.

Since you're not building or sharing major collections the authorities have no
interest in you whatsoever and even in the impossibly rare case they do, you
can reasonably assert your innocence by the fact you did delete the few files
you did get by accident.

hookah July 19th, 2006 07:39 PM

Aaron,

I have recently had the same problem as a few others here, downloading everything that shows up as search results, including ******* kp (searching for videos with the keyword "young" is a bad idea!! - I expected to get 18 year old variety stuff, not toddlers). Your comments are definitely making me feel better. I have been constantly scrubbing my hard drive since I found i had that **** downloaded.

I still fear that the feds are going to show up at my house and take my computer and inspect it and find something and give me some 5-10 sentence because I was "in possession." I have never been a paranoid person or even worried about the government watching me, but now I just feel like a dirty fugitive.

I really hope you are right, that if I did fall into some kp sting trap on gnutella that my deleting the files (I actually stopped most from finishing dl'ing) would exonerate me. I still hate this feeling. I didn't knowingly do anything wrong but this country could still put me in federal prison for several years if they so chose.

Furthermore, the post below by killians is ******* horrifying if it is true in its entirety. It is all I can think about right now. P2P porn is obviously not worth it with all the sick ****ers sharing kp.

The items were deleted, but I didn't completely follow procedure. It'd just happened so many times I just see it and delete it. It doesn't really phase me anymore and I've been P2P sharing for years.

Three months ago, Feds showed up at my work, and at my house with a search and seizure warrant. They took five computers, 600 cds and dvds, and said "have a nice day, we'll be in touch."

I'm currently without a lawyer on retainer because it's federal and costs $10-15,000 for one if you haven't been charged yet. They can spend the next 285 days toying around with my stuff before deciding to charge me. I haven't slept more than a couple hours a night for three months because I know "how it looks". The law does not care what your intent was. They don't care about how the internet works. They only care that there was ever illegal porn on your computer.

I will probably go away for the Federal minimum sentence of 5 years, if not longer. It's taken me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I will not see justice in this case because the law is ignorant.

This is just to let you all know, be VERY careful. It might be your door they come knocking on next.

Any updates, killian?

hookah July 19th, 2006 07:45 PM

also,
can you not be charged if "they" just have the log showing you downloaded this trash... is that why they take your comp and search for the illegal files?

Hyper-kun July 19th, 2006 09:23 PM

No, such logs prove nothing. Just encrypt your disks, get Alzheimer and never worry about the FUD in here again.

"Any updates, killian?"

They don't read forums in Guantanamo Bay.

Stratiotes July 19th, 2006 11:34 PM

I reformatted my drive and ran a defrag. Should that be enough?

Hyper-kun July 19th, 2006 11:54 PM

I don't know whether Aaron is an undercover DEA agent but that "defrag destroys all evidence" is pretty much nonsense. Especially running defrag after format is completely pointless. You thought you're smart because you knew that's gonna be faster, right? After a format completely fill the disk with non-compressible data. That should really destroy all evidence unless you're public no. 1 in which case the billion to restore the data anyway might be justified. Yeah I know under Windows such a simple task is really difficult to accomplish. Just download a boot disk for Linux or any BSD and use dd to overwrite your disk (dd if=/dev/zero bs=64k of=/dev/path_to_raw_device). That's a one-liner and effective.

Nonetheless, you should really use disk encryption and get some Alzheimer. There's no safer way and I'm pretty sure real lolipedofins are smart enough for that.

hookah July 20th, 2006 02:01 AM

Jesus, even having the feds come to my house and take my computer would be just about the most shaming experience of my life. How would I explain to the roommates..

F' peer2peer smut.

I'm using CyberScrub to delete "beyond recovery" most of the stuff on my HD. Is there anything in the registry or anything I need to worry about. I am pretty much computer illiterate, as my situation would suggest.

AaronWalkhouse July 20th, 2006 04:31 AM

It works better if you don't reformat the disk because all the existing data
moving around overwrites the sectors that used to have the offending data.

Since you "emptied" the disk first, you'll have to get one of those secure delete
tools to scrub all of that empty space now.

AaronWalkhouse July 20th, 2006 04:35 AM

The main thing is DON'T PANIC. It's not like the stuff has a magic spell on it
that psychically drags feds to your door. Just delete the little bit you got by
accident and defrag and no cop on the planet will be able to claim you are some
kind of evil porn addict.

What's a Regular Joe to Do?

Hey All.

Not sure if anybody is checking this thread any longer, but I have some thoughts and issues to discuss along the lines of "underage nudity."

First of all, somebody mentioned previously that most files are labeled incorrectly, either in an effort to make people think they are what they aren't, or to make people think they aren't what they really are (what?). For example, my first foray into this subject came one day when I had results that included "16yo," "17yo," etc (i.e. under 18) in the title. At first, I think to myself, "why in God's name would anybody BLATANTLY ADVERTISE that these files are of underage people? This can't be real." I was very suspicious, at first thinking that the people really were of age. Afterward, I thought that the reason they were advertising "Hey, I'm illegal" to the world was because they were bait courtesy of the FBI. Anyway, I selected one, downloaded it to about 50%, then paused and previewed. The person depicted was indeed young, but COULD have been 18. Too close for comfort, thought I. So cancel, delete the temp.

Upon further research, I read that "deleting is not enough." I promptly downloaded the free program aptly titled "Eraser," which can both erase (i.e. overwrite randomly slash scrambling) both empty space of a HD, as well as erasing the Recycle Bin. I've had good results, and have considered formatting and reinstalling Windows, but recent posts have caused me to feel that it may not be worth it.

Well now, after reviewing the posts on this subject, I'm torn between those that feel that a few accidental files (which does happen to friggin' EVERYONE) are harmless and those that have gotten nailed for just that, i.e. a few accidental files, i.e. Mr. Killians.

I would be very anxious to hear anyone's and everyone's response to this, as well as welcoming suggestions as to further courses of action. I think that I've been relatively careful and responsible as to my actions (Erasing, etc). One very good piece of advice for those still wishing to download legit porn (ahem) is to be AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE. Search for particular stars, studios, titles, and the like. Also, preview ASAP... if it's illicit, JUNK IT. I am not one of those people that leaves their comp on for days on end, sharing this and that. When I DL, I watch it every inch of the way.

OK Y'All. I welcome your rejoinder.

jay173 July 30th, 2006 11:50 PM

yea of course theres people from other countrys on limewire and i got to repect that, but i think we all know whats right and wrong about this subject in america:rolleyes:

yobuzzb July 31st, 2006 10:05 PM

Oh give me a break! This is a real question? Rule of thumb for anything thought possibly illegal; If you have to ask, it usually is. In the U.S., people in prison despise that kind of person. They don't care if you make it, produce it, buy it, give it, sell it, condone it or came upon it quite by accident. If you get prosecuted for the offence and go to prison, you'll get more attention than you've ever gotten in your entire life. Hollywood stars don't get the kind of attention this kind of person would get. Moreover, common sense tells any rational thinking human being this is illegal and anyone who has anything directly or indirectly to do with that kind of filth should be tarred, feathered and lit on fire, then put out to feel an inkling of the long lasting pain they cause. If what you have is accidental, rid yourself of it immediately!!!

jay173 August 1st, 2006 01:38 AM

what a bunch of wackos we should tar and feather you, cause you sound crazy

Uncle Bill August 7th, 2006 01:16 AM

The dangers of KP on your PC go beyond legal issues. If you are applying for a security clearance, job in a family oriented company, child care, political office and the like and it is discovered, your life will be HELL. Some enemies hacked in a local judge's computer and found KP (or put it there): his life is ruined.

WorriedGuy October 22nd, 2006 04:36 PM

Hey guys, sorry for bumping this up like.

About 2 months ago I came into a sticky situation like all else on here. Downloaded a 8 minute movie, with a completly fine title.

Turned out to be something that kind of looked like...yep. Now I closed, deleted, defraged (If this is the standard type of defrag you are talking about like, right clicking on screen etc) but am still **** worried.

Live in UK, not as strict as US but I simply want a straight answer, are the coppers gonna bust down me door?

Peerless October 22nd, 2006 04:41 PM

odds are low assuming this was a random incident....

grimbo930 October 24th, 2006 12:44 PM

limewire

Hi I am new to this limewire stuff and I too have been caught out. The title was legit but the content was not. Have I any cause for concern? Not good a good start I might add !! But what I would like to know is how can you catch these people?
Any input would be appreciated
Grim

tito_161 October 25th, 2006 08:19 PM

the thing about limewire/frostwire/bearshare ect. is that ppl use them for porn and music so be VERY careful wen looking in images and videos. as for catching the ppl i think its immposible

Gununit1040 November 3rd, 2006 03:02 PM

yea i agree completely, there has to be over... 500 million computers in the world? and the odds that they are gonna catch you are very, very very slim.... but the fact of the matter is, you shouldnt be downloading porn off the internet anyway... watch it on HBO Late Night: =), its safer, funner, and a whole lot more action XD

ultrachicken November 11th, 2006 07:43 PM

I just deleted limewire way to much hassle, ill stick to good old purchasing if i want porn

mattt9998 November 26th, 2006 10:01 PM

In NY state the cops,FBI or who ever it is that catches these sickos..they say that they spend most of there time busting the people that are creating and uploading the child porn, of course if they happen to come across that you have child pornograhy on your PC they may bust you,

a couple times I have accidentially downloaded this crap that had a mis-labled file name...just to be safe I formated my drive..the full slow format, a quick format wont totally erase it. A defrag wont erase it if you already do it on a regular basis as if your drive is not fragmented there are not many files it has to move, and no moved files means no erases files.

There should be a way for us to report the people that have the underage stuff to the cops...anyone know of a way to do that?

wondering why November 27th, 2006 01:08 AM

Yep, you can start with these guys...:rolleyes_2:
http://www.ic3.gov/

matbowls300 November 28th, 2006 12:57 PM

Ok guys lets face it Child Porn is DEFINITELY illegal no doubt. But When your 15 like I am... Your hormones kick in... And looking at adult porn is kinda just wrong...Basically how you adult people think that child porn is wrong. When your a kid like me, you don't think like that... You Just Don't. I Too have downloaded child porn from lime wire... But this happen about a year ago i was searching for "regular porn" But came across something different which got me addicted. Ok Lets think of something..... a 12 year old girl... being watched by a 15 year old isent as bad as some 65 year old watching it. Minors watching Minors should be legal...Because once again when your 15..watching a girl who is 25 is just sick!!! Just like you parents think watching minors is sick..... I have friends that are addicted to it too...Its really sadd. And Just think of it...A minor going to jail for looking at minor porn??? that makes no sense.

matbowls300 November 28th, 2006 12:59 PM

Also to conclude, It doesent help when lime wire has this stuff wide open. They should add a blocker so kids like me cant get access to that stuff...

AaronWalkhouse November 28th, 2006 01:31 PM

An addiction like that wouldn't go away just because you get older.
Do you still want that addiction after you turn 18?

Keep searching and downloading that stuff, and you can be sure that some cop
will eventually find you. The gnutella network is not anonymous enough to avoid it.

AaronWalkhouse November 28th, 2006 01:34 PM

As for blocking, see this post: Keywords worth adding to your Keyword Filter

matbowls300 November 28th, 2006 03:50 PM

sure if i get caught wont be too bad...im a minor..i probaly get redirected to consoling which i would like

matbowls300 November 28th, 2006 03:57 PM

Honestly Lime wire should be blamed for underage porn found on there web. This is because They should AUTOMATICLY block the keywords and not put a option...than there would be no problems like this now would there.

wondering why November 28th, 2006 05:55 PM

Mate no offence as your just a kid, but you really need to do some research on p2p, it doesn't work like you think it does...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer-to-peer

Also a little insight as to why decent human beings think child porn is evil...
Half of those young girls and boys you see having s*x are shot in the arm with some sort of dr*g and filmed maybe by their father or their uncle or maybe even the neighbour, or even still some low life sleeze bag that makes money off of them...they could be raped, held hostage and so and so on.....

Still think it's ok stuff do you....

matbowls300 November 28th, 2006 06:14 PM

wow i dident know they ****ged up the kids..... wow...Im going to stop..Because if something I do hurts others im not going to do it... See I thought when i viewed it it dident hurt anyone...But now i figured out..when i watch it...Its like promoteing it.

AaronWalkhouse November 28th, 2006 10:41 PM

Eggzactly. Most of those scumbags have been caught and it's only a matter of time for the rest.

Recently one of those guys has been caught and put in the jug because he
'adopted' a russian girl and exploited her for years, putting videos out on the
internet. She's OK now, but he'll be wondering for the rest of his short and
miserable life in solitary when the shank or the poison will finally claim him.

His case alone has hopefully added real security to the rest of the russian
orphans hoping to get a real life lately.

As for the ******* who finally terminates that monster: Thanks, but I would
still shoot you on sight. Do it for your own pleasure but you can be sure I
would not celebrate with you. You are still a lifer and you do it for your own
personal pleasure and status in Max, nothing more. Do us a favour and off
yourself too.

(The foregoing text is purely a personal perspective for which I will never
apologize or repent. Deal with it on your own, because anybody who
challenges it will surely suffer consequences no matter which country in which
they currently live. Take it from a former recce trooper who can hop any 'western'
or russian military transport jet at will with a wink and a nod from the pilot. :D)

AaronWalkhouse November 28th, 2006 10:54 PM

Have I made my position clear? http://www3.telus.net/public/a3476/tongue3.gif

AaronWalkhouse November 28th, 2006 11:10 PM

Mat, I really must speak plainly.

I really hope you really mean what you say. Stick to bowling until you are ready
to take responsibility for not only yourself, but your girl and your eventual
offspring as well. That's where your heart will live for the rest of your life.

Good luck, kiddo. :D

spazeree January 3rd, 2007 02:23 AM

Wiping won't save you either if they've got the file they uploaded from you. The paper recently had another story of the guy who got his computer ganked after the Secret Service notified local authorities he may have KP on his computer. He said it was completely accidental but he wasn't in a big hurry to admit he downloaded piles of porn to the local paper. They still wanted to charge him over the 2 files.

It's also common to get charged for "destruction of evidence" if you wipe your drive before they come knockin'. One guy who was trading KP wiped his system once he heard they were coming for his computer. Somehow he got an investigator who decided to get the computer after the initial interview. He wiped it before they came back but they had evidence of the files by virtue of what they uploaded from it on the P2P.

It's impossible to prove innocence once they show up. And god forbid if some trojan is using your computer for this sort of thing. I doubt anybody will buy your story. You'd almost have to have a screen log program tracking yourself , keeping a video timeline of what you do on your computer to prove you were actually deleting the stuff the moment you realized what it was. It'd be the only way to demonstrate you weren't some degenerate using the pictures as your desktop background.

Hmm, a new excuse for full time government tracking of your computer: "We'll protect you from kiddie porn and won't throw you in PMITA prison!"

waterinthefuel January 31st, 2007 06:07 AM

As my first and probably only post on this board about this, I can tell you it happens. I was looking on Kazaa back in 2002 for a song called, "Young". It was by Kenny Chesney, but at the time it was so new I wasn't sure of the artist. I type in "young". I ended up getting a few dozen illegal images. I tried deleting them, but the gov't was able to pull them back up.

I got out of prison in Feb of 06, after doing a 27 month (22 months served) sentence. I had to do my last month in protective custody, as someone found out what I was in there for and wanted to hurt me. This happened so long ago, child porn on p2p networks was almost unheard of, so nobody really believed me when I said how I got it. Now it's common knowledge.

All I can say is go buy an effing CD and be done with it.

I read some article about limewire and it sounded like the FBI was going after the people who made the underage movies, not just people who happened to have it on their computer.

Can anyone clarify this for me plz?

If you do see it report it if your not sure of the ages don't download it and if you did delete immediately that way your sure not to get caught with it.

Yes it does happen.

Any updates, killian?

My son was arrested in VT while he was in college and we go to court Mar. 20th for the arraignment. He did as many of you have talked about-he typed in porn and got alot of downloads and just downloaded them all wihput checking to see what they were and many of them were mistitled. Somehow those doenloads got shared to Itunes and someone from his school got them and turned him in. He didn't even know what he had downloaded and they arrested him. He had never been in trouble in his life now he is being treated like a sexual predator and who know what will happen. His life may be ruined-Who is going to go after Limewire and these websites that are aloowing this to happen. I don't get it-We go after the drug kingpins but not the cp ones. The law is proscuting the kids that get caught up in the filth without even knowing what is happening. Something has to be done before many of you go to jail for innocently thinking you are searching for porn-Maybe it should go back to like it was in my day where Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler were the porn rescources.

Does that make sense that the files could be shared through ITunes without someone knowing?
Thanks for any comments.

I know this threads been dead awhile but I did a study on some of the .jpg files that where labeled as naked teens, underage or child porn. I found that most of them where either naked grown woman, jokes images that showed a random picture that said ha ha you pervert on them or viruses. only 12 out of over 40 files had young naked teens in them most of which where the same pic but just labled different. and there where several pics of teens that had cloths on and where posted in a sexy way.
Oh and I got several files that when you clicked delete it wouldn't delete and had for options had only only open, preview, send to, open with and cut and copy Of cource I new they where a virus because when I viewed it with paintshop pro under thumbnails it had a blank image. So I clicked cut on the folder, then paste in anouther folder and then opened the folder but not the file again and saw it had this pic. I then exited the folder clicked cut then I pasted it into the deletion bin and clicked delete and it was gone.

AaronWalkhouse March 12th, 2007 04:46 PM

Jane, it is possible to leave iTunes open and sharing a download folder. This
makes it possible to inadvertently share everything that was downloaded by
accident as well as by choice.

I always advise people not to share the downloads folder at all because not
only are you automatically sharing stuff before you get a chance to check it
for viruses, worms and contraband like illegal porn, but you may also be
infringing on copyrights if somebody comes along later and uploads some of
the perfectly legal files you downloaded.

Don't worry about the illegal web sites that distribute underage porn. They
are always found, no matter where in the world they try to hide, and the
police in all countries are always willing to work together to arrest whole gangs
of these criminals and their customers whenever and wherever they are found.

LimeWire, on the other hand, is not a web site or porn distributor. It is just a
piece of software people use to share and explore for whatever they want,
and it has no control over what people do. One may as well blame Internet
Explorer too.
