Default Have you heard the news?

I personally did not see it, so have no evidence but a friend of mine told me about a news article on UK national news regarding organisations planning to take legal action against Limewire and to (I quote) "put a stop to illegal downloading".

Has anyone else heard any news regarding this?

I personally think this is merely big boys talk and will only give Limewire more publicity. I don't see how anyone can take them to court, as it is the responsibility of the uploaders whether they wish to break the law or not.

There are problems with illegal material on Limewire, but I think that is a seperate, more vast issue in itself.

Discuss.

Yes, apologies for that. I thought I had posted in the wrong boards, hence the identical posts.

Still no opinions, though?

Your friend might be referring to the NYT's article http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/28/te...8grokster.html that interviewed LimeWire's Mark Gorton about the US Supreme Court hearings related to file sharing networks.

He pointed out that since LimeWire is released as free open source software through limewire.org, the software and protocol cannot be stopped.

There are other ongoing filesharing lawsuits in the UK, Canada and around the world. For example, Google news has over 600 entries for the SCOTUS Grokster/MGM hearings, so I'm not sure where your friend got his "idea."

Stief, my friend did not acquire an "idea", he was referring to a television news article in the UK that was broadcast last night.

It does seem similar to the article you mentioned, however.

I know that record companies don't like it, but I really don't see how they can have a case for prosecution. News articles like this one always crop up from time to time, and the reporters don't even seem to know the first idea about file sharing or even the functions of Internet downloads.

Fire and radio satires now bookmarked (I hadn't seen those).
Thanks.

This isn't satire, but should be:
Back in 1996 campers were targeted for singing campfire songs, and the Scouts still remember.
Quote:
Martinsville, Ind., Aug. 22 -- Media outlets this week have reported the fact that the summer camps across the United States are being required to pay fees to the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP) for use of their artists' songs by campers. The American Camping Association, which accredits more than 2,200 camps across the United States, negotiated a blanket license with ASCAP earlier this year and advised its camps to pay the negotiated fee.

On an even more serious note, the EFF has also added a "Deep Links" section to help keep up on the Grokster/MGM case at http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/

Nah--that's the American way. We just shrug and the Americans find something more to buy. There's more where Céline Dion came from
