Default Limewire scandal

Big news this year was the LimeWire privacy scandal caused by an investment firm employee. By using LimeWire in a careless manner on company computers, he exposed the company to a major security breach. This security breach caused controversy and compromised company data.

The most tangible effect leaving this “window” to the internet open while he downloaded files off of LimeWire was the loss of over 2,000 personal records form the company. By allowing the company computers to be open for viewing he made clients and corporate identity theft possible.

Names, addresses, investment information, bank accounts, social security numbers and more were all right there for the picking. Among the 2,000 unlucky enough to be victims of the theft was United States Supreme Court Justice Steven G. Breyer. The confidential files were left open to theft for a whopping six months.

I haven't used LW in a long time, so the following may be out of date...

if LW still prompts a user if they want to let it (LW) browse their HDD for files, then IMHO LW is partly at fault...that is the most stupid/criminal/lamer aspect of the installer (or perhaps was)...

now if said user on their own decided to share the C: drive then he/she is at fault...

my bet says its the installer...yeah, the user in the end was ignorant, but still...I've always had an issue with that part of the installer....of course the LW devs don't think much of me (nor do I of them) so its no surprise they ignored my comments in the past on this subject...

Default Fraudulent Site

Does anyone know if this an authorized vendor for the Limewire products?Limewiresoftware
I just spent 49.95 on the 4.16 version of Limewire which this website is selling along with lifetime upgrades. After researching it,which I should have done before hand, I believe it to be fraudulently offering your product. I am trying to get a refund via paypal,or my bank, but have my doubts. Please Advise me as to the authenticity of this site.
Thank You

Hiya, bluiz1955, and welcome...

Now the bad stuff..

Yup... It was a con... A scam site...

Might not believe this but, no matter what country you are in it is wise to report every detail to INTERPOL... Yes, INTERPOL.

Sorry for you, really.

I'm with Peerless here (and on a lot of other points, as well) that Limewire should simply be avoided.
If one really must have Limewire for some obscure, and probably inexcusable reason, then it is best to simply D/L a free copy from OldVersion... The link is in my sig below...

There is absolutely no rational reason to be concerned about acquiring a 'legal' copy of Limewire Pro... Ha Ha Ha... There is nothing special about it.

Peerless' comments and mine may seem a little strange coming from mods here but we have all had it re: LW... It is simply insufficient, insupportable rubbish by any of today's standards.

Phex or the 'special' 5.x.x series of BearShare that is mentioned within these forums is the way to go for Gnutella Network ops.

Remember that the Torrent community and the Gnutella Network Community are still very much of a symbiotic relationship... Some things are better with one 'system' and other things are better with the 'other'.
The idea is to always feed/seed BOTH !

Again, sorry you were shafted, but take minor comfort in the fact that you are one of an emormous number of people who have had the same dreadful experience... Big deal, eh... Doesn't really help !

Try Phex ! Hey, the actual developers are HERE and AVAILABLE !!!!!!!

Price is right, also !
Zip.

Now, about this here "investment firm"...

Balls
Total Balls.

Peerless and I have got stuff installed, updated and always running that would make the above mentioned 'tale' an impossibility on our machines.

We are nothing special. We are not 'doing' anything special.
But, we are 'doing' 24/7 the simple basics.

This "investment firm" mentioned... Who was providing their 'security' ?
EDS or similar scum ?
For how many 100s of 1,000s per contract ?

Who established basic admin rights - user rights - sharing rights ?

Jeeeez, a quick scan of these Gnutella Forums would provide more than ample protection by simply applying the basics as recommended here by numerous posters.

I cannot help but think that this is just another garbage urban-legend tale.
Unfortunately, I also have absolutely no probs with believing that every word of it is true !!! LOL

I ran Malwarebytes on a "friend's" machine only 2 days ago...
This 'friend' is actually 'the man' and he works counter to child porn junk (plus other standard human foibles) in the country where I live... He's "large", as they say, in his biz...
Removed over 800 really bad-boogie apps that were embedded in his WORK PORTABLE.
He needed a jaw-bra !
He especially had a good chuckle over the more than 60 keyloggers discovered.
Gave him a copy to install in 'the office'... waiting to hear the results !

It really is simply unbelievable how bullsh*t the whole so-called computer security biz actually is... Well, no, it's not unbelievable...

Back to the 'investment firm tale'...

As sweet as it may be to have something else to 'blame' on Limewire, I just cannot see it... Nothing to do with them when it comes to the real-world level of properly specified, installed and maintained commercial networks... Especially those that are extremely 'sensitive'...
At the absolute minimum, it should have been completely impossible for ANY employee to even access the internet... Downloading and... AND installing apps should have been 100% impossible... Not only impossible but with bells, whistles, Monty Python 16 ton weights falling upon and... and... Meaning INSTANT alerts to admin personnel that somebody somehow managed to hack security and do something amazingly stupid.

As I said...
It's urban-legend
or
Dumfukistan über alles.........

hmmm... Thinking about it, it's probably the latter.
