I have serious problems to get LW installed:

Java is installed
I tried with ulimit -s 2048 but doesn't seem to have any effect.

You are using JRE 1.1.8, right? It won't work well with the installer. Better upgrade to JRE 1.3.1 or 1.4, - or if you already installed that, use it by default.
