mandrake8.0: No Java virtual machine could be found...
 

when i want to install limewire this message appears:

Preparing to install...
No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program.

what do i have to do??

I'm running into the same problem with RedHat Linux 7.1. I just posted the same problem today. Have you installed the Java Runtime Environment file? There's a link to it on LimeWire's website when you chose to download LimeWire. Unfortunatly, I've downloaded it already and I'm still getting the same error message. From what I understand, once you download and install it, LimeWire should work...

Okay, so you've both got a 1.3.1 version of java, right? Good. :-)

It sounds like all you have to do is add the Java bin directory to your path. Assuming you use the bash shell, in your home directory there's a file called .bash_profile

Open this file in your favourite text editor. You need to add the path to your java bin directory onto the end of the PATH= line. Here's what my PATH line looks like:

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/usr/java/jdk1.3.1/bin

Two things to note:

1. Each entry on the line is seperated by a colon
2. The location of your java bin directory may be different. You need to find out where it is on your system.

I'm using RedHat 7.1 and the 1.3.1 JDK.

Alright... I edited my .bash_profile with the information you gave me and I'm still getting the same error..

Correct me if I'm wrong but, even if my path is incorrect, shouldn't I get a message when I type in the "java -version" command? You know, just to let me know it's at least installed. I'm guessing this path editing is to let LimeWire know I have it installed. (I'm completly guessing here, I'm still new to Linux) Please reply, it sounds like you know what you're talking about!! Thanks!

Okay, I tried changing my path again and I managed to get the "java -version" command to work, and I also have been able to get the LimeWire installation process started!

I'm still experiencing problems getting it going but, I'm going to read through more posts before I go into detail on that. Thanks for your help!

Typing 'java -version' at the command line will only work if the system knows where to find the java program. The PATH variable tells the system where to look for java, as well as other programs. It sounds like you didn't set it to the correct location the first time. :-)
