Linux PATH Explanation (URL)
 

The following URL will help you to understand how PATH works in Linux, and how to set or append paths on a user or global basis.

Since I installed Mandrake 8 a few days ago (bye bye MS) this has been one of my most curious questions. The document linked below will help you to deal with future installation issues that have path problems (*cough* Limewire).
