j2re???

hi,

I just installed the newest java version from sun.com:
jre-1_5_0_05-linux-i586.bin

but When I try to install LimeWire rpm, it says following:
<home/reg/Desktop/LimeWireSoftLinux.rpm';echo RESULT=$?
error: Failed dependencies:
j2re >= 1.4.1 is needed by LimeWire-free-4.9.37-0
RESULT=1

Why? How do I get it installed? Thank you!

Typing 'which java' at the command line should tell you which java is installed. FYI: one of the sun downloads install a new default java and one doesn't. Try searching the forum for more help.

hm,
reg@linux:~> which java
/usr/bin/java
reg@linux:~>
is it what you're looking for, not really, eh?

I meant for you to follow the symlink(s). /usr/bin/java should point to your java install or /etc/alternatives/java which points to your install. Your system is saying you don't have the correct java installed, you might have used the one that installs locally as I mentioned above. Either that or java isn't in your path, if so add it.

Code:

reg@linux:~> ls /usr/bin/java
/usr/bin/java
reg@linux:~> ls -l /usr/bin/java
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 22 2005-08-13 14:30 /usr/bin/java -> /etc/alternatives/java
reg@linux:~> ls -l /etc/alternatives/java
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 35 2005-08-13 15:24 /etc/alternatives/java -> /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-sun/bin/java
