I just installed LimeWire this morning and ran into a problem soon after I got it running.

What happens is the disk drive starts thrashing so bad that the system becomes unresponsive for minutes at a time. I'm running the latest beta of Limewire and JRE 1.5.0.11, java is in the system path and I'm running under Mandriva 2006 Community.

I've searched the forums and no one seems to have seen just this problem.

LW is a disk intensive programme/application because, if you think about what is happening, LW is uploading requests to other P2P users while downloading your requests all at the same time. Plus, that does not include what LW does when it first starts up, which is to index and count up the number of files in your shared directory. Therefore, LW is constantly working the moment you run it.

So if you have an oldish PC (say over 5 years old) your machine may well seem to "thrash" as opposed to a more modern machine, which tend to have server-like facilities, that can handle the extra stress LW will put on it.

I noticed (a few months ago) that *sometimes* LW would jump CPU cyles to >90% under Mandriva 2006 Official. This led to the fans kicking in, and other such anomalous and irritating behaviour.

I never did find a cause and fix, but the workaround was to either close the session or just restart the machine, which made me wonder if this was a virtual memory swap problem.

Sorry I can't help further: I'm not using the linux box any more.

I'm pretty sure I have enough computer for the job not that it's a monster. 1.33Ghz Athlon, 512Meg RAM.

I don't think LimeWire should keep the computer locked up for five to ten minutes at a time before I can get a response from it. Should I see if the development guys are interested enough to have me do some sort of monitoring?

This is consistent. Fire up LimeWire and the system runs out of gas every time.

To me it sounds like a Java memory leak issue. But since I know absolutely nothing about Linux I really don't know. You may want to post it in the LimeWire developers forum. Have you tried using Java 6.

You are right, your PC should have enough power to deal with LW. However, like Grandpa, I know very little about Linux and nothing about Mandriva 2006.

I can only suggest that you may have to join the Mandriva Linux Users Club http://www.mandriva.com/en/community/resources/club to get your answer.
