Default unsupported codec

when i downloaded a movie ( movie.avi ) my quicktime player gives me an error statement that the required comressor is not present. after reading about this on apple support , i discoverd i need mp43 codec . where can i get this ? i downloaded some indeo - 4 & 5 - but not sure if they are installed. thanks
