Default Asked and answered and still no DVD will play

Someone asked about getting a dvd to play in Quicktime. I, too, tried and failed. The suggestion was to try realplayer. Did that. Still, no .mpeg or.avi download will play. Messages vary: "quicktime lacks component needed to play, and component not available"; on real player, the dvd's are grayed out. The limewire player won't play the dvds either. Any solution? Is there sometime I'm not getting here? Please help.
