Angry I want to share files but can't

Between NAT on my router and OS 10.2's Firewall I can't seem to share my files with anyone anymore. Do I have to open a port on the router to do so? I'd rather not if I don't have to.

It would help if you opened your listening port (probably 6346) but it's not necessary. Anyone who can download files via gnutella should also be able to upload files, - although you will receive fewer upload requests when firewalled.

Default Similar Problem

I have a Powerbook G3 running OS 10.2 and Limewire 2.6. I'm connected to the Internet via Airport, attached to a cable modem.

For months, i was able to share hundreds of files simply by opening port 6346 in the built-in Airport firewall and directing it to the local IP address of my machine, 10.0.1.3. It worked great.

After a recent OS 10.1 security update, though, it all stopped cold. Not a single upload, and instead of the network connection keeping the machine awake, it would go to sleep after the 5 minutes I had set up. At the same time, I had updated the Airport Base Station software, so I'm not really sure what happened.

Something changed, and I've tried everything I can think of to fix the problem. I'm quite certain that all my settings are entered correctly (despite what the snotty lady at Limewire said).

Has anyone else had trouble with this? Do I need to turn file sharing on in the OS X control panel? I don't think I should have to, but I don't know what else to do. Gnutella needs content, but I can't share and that sucks.

I think I'm having a similar problem. I'm a new mac user, I think I've got my settings right, but no uploads after an OS upgrade. Also, in the search window of lime wire, the sharing file light in the bottom left has gone from green to red??

Default I think I got it

I'm the original poster. Sorry I was too rushed to register.

In OS X.2, or Jaguar, there's a Gnutella/Limewire setting for opening port 6346. Under System Prefs. > Sharing, click on your Firewall tab, and click the New button. You'll see a drop down menu with AOL at the top. Pull down to Gnutella/Limewire. It should now appear checked in the Firewall tab. Good to go.

The Airport user may have enabled WEP in his/her Airport Admin, possibly disabling sharing? I think you want WEP on though.

Anyway, I think it's nice there's all these Mac users who *want* to share files. Most of my friend won't.

Unhappy Sharing problem too

I too have a sharing problem. I add a folder that I want to share to the shared folder list in the LimeWire prefs, but they do not show next to the green light. Occasionally they will show, but very slow counting all the files (1 every 5 sec). On the next opening of LW, the count starts all over again and is slow indexing the files again.

How do I fix this problem?
