Limewire slooow in Jaquar
 

I recently upgraded to OS X 10.2.1 and since then when Limewire is open, it seems to take up a lot of my CPU resulting in a significant slowing of performance, particularly when trying to open other programs from the dock.

I did upgrade to Limewire 2.7 but still having the same problem.

When I hide Limeware, everything seems fine. What could be causing this?

I have the same problem AND I'm no professor but i think it has somthing to do with the graphics card, maby some fluke that eats all the memory on the graphics card. But as I said, Im not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

My dock performance seems to be seriously compromised with 2.7.3.

It's like syrup until i get out of Limewire.

Is someone working on speeding up Limewire?

I'm having the same problem with 10.2.1 and 2.7.3. I don't think it's graphics-card related, as I don't have one. (Not a Quartz-Extreme compatible one anyway). So upgrading to Jaguar shouldn't have made any difference if it is the card. It must just be a conflict of some kind. Remember OS9? If you had any 3rd party extensions installed, you more than likely had a conflict. OSX is better, but the problem hasn't been eliminated. Also, have you SEEN the new system folder? It's like a jungle in there, and it could be any two (or more) of the files in there that won't co-operate, or none of them!

I emailed them with the problem, but I just got an automated reply sending me to these forums, 'cause I'm not a 'PRO' user. Let's hope they fix the problem soon.

P.S. The above "diagnosis" is merely speculation, and may well be wrong. It's just my guess as to what's probably the cause, but I'm not an expert on these things by far, so don't rely on it!

I'm no expert on these things either, but I suspect the problem is a combination of memory hogage and problems with the current release of java for Apple (which are wel known to the folx at Limewire, but Apple's been slow to get Java up to speed). I've always had a problem with Limewire dragging like molassas--had it in OS 9, and still have it in OS X 10.5. From what I hear, it doesn't get much better in Jaguar, and since I don't need or can't use most of Jaguar's features (having an older iMac), I just live with it. Since OS X uses a Unix kernal, it's not an extension problem like we had with OS 9.

If, like me, you have an older iMac then there's not much we can do other than try another Gnutella client like Aquisition, which I've tried--works OK, and I'm debating a permanent switch because Aquisition is not a Java app, but OS X native so it doesn't have the slowdown problems.

The point I'm trying to get at is that Limewire is not a native Mac program--it is written in Java, which is cross platform so it will work with a variety of operating systems. Apple has not kept pace with the Java platform, which has caused the folx at Limewire a lot of problems that they can only try to work around.
