won't play my mpegs

when i download mpegs & try to play them i get "couldn't open the file 'NAME OF FILE.MPG' because a software component needed by the movie could not be found." i've gotten this message for all of the mpegs i've downloaded. what am i missing?!

Try using Mplayer. It's a unix based video player, and has been able to play movies that quicktime refuses to play. You can get it at sourceforge
