Angry MAC OSX 10.1.4 and cable modem probelm

Everytime I use Limewire for MacOSX to download and share, it doesn't take more than a few minutes for the ball on the lower left of the screen to turn red. After a whole lot of stewing and fuming, I finally figured out that if I turn off my cable modem and then restart the computer, I can get back on line. What gives? Any help would be appreciated.
