General Mac question ref. AVI files. What do I need to do to get AVI files to play on my mac? (G4 OSX10.1.5) |
Quicktime will already play an uncompressed avi. The problem is that there are numerous compression schemes for avi's and Quicktime doesn't support all of them. There are plugins available for some, so you can download them and be in business, but you have to find the plugin. One popular one is DivX and it has been updated recently, although I haven't tried the update. |
Some .avi files are DivX and can be played or converted to QuickTime 6 by various third party utilities. However, many .avi files use Indeo codices that aren't available under OS X, but will play in 9.x with the right files in your Extensions folder. Of course, you're back to short file names that way. |
The best thing to do is to dl video lan client, it plays jsut about all avi's, even if they're corrupted, including corrupted mpg's. VLC solved the issue of some mpg's that were 50 MB but about 10 seconds long, there's something in there that QT doesn't like. VLC plays right through with no problem. |
Do you have a URL for this program, or do you expect us to download it with LimeWire? |

Hmm, seems to do well with some strange .mpeg files that seemed to loop back on themselves, where I'd had to drag the location pointer back to the beginning to view the next section. It doesn't work with the Indeo video files I have, though. I guess I'll still have to boot back into 9 to view those. |
