Opening a .mpg movie in QuickTime

Everytime that I download and try to play a mpg movie I get a message that a software component needed by the movie could not be found. I need help!:(

Not all files that end in .mpg are MPEG-1/2 files that QuickTime can handle.

You may have better luck with vlc (VideoLan Client), available at http://www.videolan.org/ .

I've also been told that you may need the MPEG-2 component which is not included in QT. You can purchase it seperately at:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/mpeg2playback/
