Lightbulb POLL: so... what's yer dload/uload prefs?

it seems i rarely see anyone ever completing a file that they download from me. i have my upload bandwidth at 26kb/s (i have cable connection) with 2 slots per user and a max of 5 users able to connect at a time. this seems fair.
i want my files shared and vise versa. so what are your prefs and are your dloads/ uloads working for you?
thanks
the a b

If you're on OSX, the firewall limits the people who can connect to you (sorry, I'm still trying to work around this and the NAT!). Too, LW serves out chunks in 97.7 KB, so if people can get them elsewhere faster, you'll not see many uploads, or only small chunks. Recently I've noticed I only see uploads in the Monitor pane when in leaf mode, and none when in Ultrapeer (seen in the Connections pane). LW has some logic that tries to find the optimal configuration of what's best for the network, and it's still under development. This means that some clients work better than others--watch the vendor/version column to see patterns. For some reason Acquisiton is having trouble completing downloads. Since any Acq client will be on OSX, the firewall will be a major factor here I think.

I've left my prefs at default, but forced IP to help others get around my NAT, and disabled ultrapeer for the time being. Still not sure about turning the firewall off. about 1/3 of the uploads attempted complete, and d/l .mpgs usually complete--sometimes after trying for weeks to get the right host at the right time.

Cheers.

Default so if no one can upload from me...

so if no one can upload from me would it be wise just to reserve most of my bandwidth for myself rather than for uploaders. i have ultrapeer mode disabled also and anyone i see connected to me always has a dl rate of zilch.
are people still getting 'chunks' here and there from me or am i just wasting bandwidth. i'm not behind a firewall but don't have OSX 10.2 so i'm stuck with lw. thanks.

?? I've my slider set to 100%, with no regrets (cable here too). It doesn't affect searches, connections or downloads as far as I know.

What OS/LW versions are you running, and can you see which clients are unable to upload in your Monitor pane? I'm a bit confused here (I thought you had OSX because this is the LimeWire>General Mac OSX Support forum).

Default now I'M confused...

i do have OSX 10.1 with lw 2.8.6. ALL uploaders (not just some), if thier transfers aren't interupted or timed out, always have a dl speed of 0 kb/s. i'm now aware lw transfers in 'chunks' and that an uploader may only get a small portion of a file from me, but thier upload speed is always at zero kb/s. this means they're getting nada from me, correct?

so OSX runs behind a firewall? is this true? i never knew i was behind a firewall.

but my point and my concern is that, as far as i can tell, no one is realy uploading anything from me.
thanks for help.

Ah! LW, unlike Acquisition (my favourite OSX client), doesn't display speeds between 0 and 1KB. The only way I know that they're still uploading is to look at the time column. As long as a time is being displayed, something is being transferred. Those downloading aren't getting much, but more than nada if they end up saying "Complete." Some end up "interrupted." I have seen some zip along at 24 KB/s, and complete. btw--most of my interrupted uploads are Limewire/Acquisition. Do any of them complete for you?

In 10.2.4 the firewall settings are in System Preferences>Internet & Network>Sharing. I want to figure them out one of these days . . . but still not sure of the risks involved in turning it off. OS 9 didn't have it, but it wasn't UNIX based like OSX.

You should uninstall 2.9.6 and download a fresh copy of 2.9.7 (it fixed some mac stuff, I hear).

Your point is good, but until we figure out how to handle the OSX firewall, others will get their stuff very slowly from us. Something is better than nothing, and they decide if our stuff is worth waiting for. At least you just have the firewall to worry about--I've got to figure out the home network NAT problem too. I'd rather see more ups than downs, or feeling like a leech. For now, I just let whoever can connect, connect.

Cheers.

Upload limit just means that the same IP has simultaneously tried to download more than the number of files you allow at once (3 is default I think).

Did you install 2.9.8? The download page is here
