how to add information files I want to share?

I have decided to put some of my band's music up, just in case anybody might notice it in a search and give it a listen...but I want to be sure the information about it is included on the downloads...

I can't get my instructions pdf to open--so I am resorting to bugging you guys....

Can anybody help?

Thanks,
Paula

Hey, welcome back

Should be easy, right? You have to save each track produced by your band as an MP3 — the level of quality is up to you. Once you have created a file, click on the tag at the base of the icon. It should then permit you to amend the title. Remember to keep the entry short otherwise the end of the message will not be visible to those who hit your file on a search.

However, there is a slightly less easy problem to overcome. People searching will not be aware of your band's name nor the titles of each track. To get some hits, you'll have to include a music classification in the tag. You'll have to decide whether you're "alternative" or "inde" or whatever you think people might use to search on a generic basis. Then, with luck, those people will download some of your tracks out of curiosity and you'll get some buzz.

Best of luck

David

Hello!

Do this:

Create mp3 files and put them in LW's shared directory usually a folder named Shared but you can choose a different location if you want from LW's preferences.

Then open up LW and your files will get hashed which could take a while!

After the hashing proccess is finished then click the Library tab and then highlight each file individually and click the Annotate button and here you can add all the meta tag information that you want to be added to your file and that will help people find your files.

Thanks for THAT tip----I'm sure I wouldn't have thought about that...I'll amend any long titles....

Shouldn't be hard to do---I certainly "know" our material! Also, interestingly, I've been shocked, surprised, delighted and occasionally disgusted (!) by the variety of things that come up in a simple search for a song title! So---I figure there's some form of the same word in there somewhere, or just maybe little gremlins having a good time hiding in the limewires, drinkin' their life away and adding in the random tune here and there!
------------------
You were right----haven't managed to talk to many artists here, as I'd hoped! But we've sold a lot of CD's, so there's a lotta ways stuff would end up being shared anyway---so what the heck! Might find a fan or two...

I've downloaded a LOT of stuff by artists I don't know...and have sought them out and even bought a couple! (Ouch---there goes the grocery money.)

Thanks for the welcome back---I ain't outta your hair YET!

Be sure in a few days to search for "Crazed Cowboys"----see what you think...or of course, visit our site
http://www.crazedcowboys.com (it's a mess, but I'm working on it)

Thanks, my friend---

Hashing???

What is it doing with them while it hashes them??? Sounds like a bad dinner, a good trip---or some obscene activity!

Will it just do it automatically? I don't have to do anything other than put them in the file?

Ah----I knew there was a way---I love the little "stickies" that pop up when I pause on a song...yeah, I want that info added for sure...

THANKS for the info!

Making a hash of it!

Joakim is on my case because I assumed you would know you had to put all the new files into the Shared folder or nominate another folder for Sharing these particular files. Sorry, I failed on that one JA — thanks for picking it up. However, once you put the files into a "Shared" folder, the hashing process is entirely automatic (that creates the html header that gets transmitted round Gnutella plains, guiding those files to their new homes with the unerring instincts of Messenger Pigeons).

Great news that you're selling more CDs. More power to your elbows (one for writing, one for playing and the other for marketing) and leave the length of my hair out of it. I comb it once a month, I swear, so no-one should ever get tangled.

All the best

Ahhhhh-----but that's because Joakim isn't aware of the YEARS (well, days) we've spent with you helping me with every detail! Yep--already had the Shared folder part figured out...
; )

You know, it's funny, but you're right----I could have sworn I heard some twittering last night after I'd dropped a couple files in...and a big flapping sound...musta been the pigeons...

Hmmm

"Hey, if you're long haired you're my dream-geek----I'm from back in the day! And---could you clarify once more---on that 91----which was it??"

In the days before my death from old age (variously reported in newspapers as a device to claim on the life insurance policies), I did have a hippy phase with shoulder length hair. As the hair evolved from military cut, I used to hang with many of the groups of the fifties, sixties and a couple from the seventies. It was a fun time. Now, I'm living off the ill-gotten gains in SE Asia, stiff as a board most mornings until I take the Zimmer frame for a trot round the block, but all right in the brain box department apart from occasional lapses into dementia. I do seem to remember that the Messenger Pigeons are almost extinct now, for example, so don't rely on me too heavily. As soon as I've made it into the Guinness Book of Records as the longest living criminal on the lam, I'll shuffle off the mortal coil again and find someone else to con (although not by quite as much as you might think.:p )

Keep selling those CDs:)

Not fair to say ill-gotten gains...much room for discusssion there to determine such...but I too am stiff as a board EVERY minute of the day...long story....and I AIN'T 91!

Dunno about my brainbox...seems kinda slow these days to me, but that could be lack of sleep...

Your con is your best point! I fall to sleep at night with the comforting sound of Oceans 11 DVD discussing their plan...devious can be be so relaxing...

Library not getting downloaded mp3s

I just downloaded and installed Limewire on my iMac, running OS 9.1
When I download an mp3, it goes to my "Shared" file in my system folder, but does not appear in my Library. What am I missing?
Thanks for any help. pbb

Lord of the Rings February 13th, 2005 10:46 AM

You're using the older version of LW 4.0 So if you want the downlds to appear in your Library window you will need to share them.

Go to LW's menu Tools>Options>Sharing & locate & add the LW download folder (Shared). Press the Apply button when you've finished. You 'might' need to go back to the library window & press Refresh.

Library Not Getting downloaded mp3s

Thanks for the help. I've done all that, and still, I have far fewer titles in my Library than in my Shared folder. What else might I be missing? pbb

Library still not showing all of shared folder downloads

I have 71 files in my shared folder, and Llimewire shows I'm only sharing 20. I have done what was suggested, and it seems that newer downloads are showing up in the library, but not ones already in Shared. Also, "Incomplete" folder shows several downloads that are actually completed. Thanks for any help on this. pbb

I'm starting to wonder if it's due to the format of some of the files you're sharing. Go to LW's menu Tools>Options>Sharing & make sure all the extension types of the files you're sharing are included. I know in OS9 it doesn't show extensions at the end of files (these are invisible.) But you can probably guess.

eg: text files will have an extension of .txt or for Word will be .doc And for movies it will depend on movie type: mpeg=mpg, QT=mov, etc. Pics=jpg or photoshop=PSD, mp3's should have .mp3 at the end.

So you might need to add the extensions to the files OR add the relevant extension types to the extensions list mentioned above.

Hope this helps.

Library still not showing all of shared folder downloads

Thank you. Not too experienced at this, so it's great to have forums like this, and moderators to help keep things running so well. I'm now up to sharing 63 of the 71 files, having added .mp3 to the end of each. I'm only sharing .mp3s.
Of the ones that still don't show up in the library, I checked them and 2 are .mp3, and the rest are listed as "movie player documents" (Quicktime) or "iTunes" documents. However, several files that DO show up in both places are "movie player documents" (Quicktime) or "iTunes" documents. So I'm still not up to speed on that. And still 2 or 3 of the files in my library under "incomplete" are files that I actually have (maybe I tried to download them twice, and kept one, but neglected to kill the other).
Thanks again for your timely help. pbb

Lord of the Rings February 18th, 2005 08:00 AM

I presume these files are within the iTunes library. Open iTunes & check those that are not showing up in the LW library. Are they mp3's or another type. There's different types of mp3 & there's also mp4 which usually uses m4a or AAC extensions. (By different types of mp3 I mean there's wma, rm (realplayer files), or ogg. That version of LW might have difficulty recognising some of those newer formats, particularly the windows ones.)

Those that show up as Quicktime files, open them up with QuickTime & hold down both apple & i keys. What info does it tell you? This 'might' give you a clue. Also just selecting them on the desktop & using apple & i keys might also give you some clues.

There are utiltities that can tell you all the details about the files but they're usually shareware.

If you encode your own files do you use iTUnes?

Lord of the Rings February 18th, 2005 03:31 PM

I have some better news for you. LW has just released a new LW 4.0.9 version for OS9!!! Yeah! Check it out: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=33991

& of course from here unless you're a pro user which would be from your personal downld page: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

paulbobbybuzz February 19th, 2005 04:36 PM

Thanks. The version I have says itÕs LaunchAnywhereTM 4.5 Macintosh Edition. Created with ÒZero GÕs InstallAnywhereTM"
I took a look at the link you gave me, and it looks like the one I have. It says it's 4.0.8. I think I got mine from this site.
Also, just to ask another question, if I download a newer version, is it a major deal to uninstall the old, and will there be any problems a newbie like me couldn't handle?
Thanks again. pbb

Lord of the Rings February 19th, 2005 11:37 PM

The download site is ALWAYS SLOW to update. LW 4.4.4 was out for ages before the site updated the text.

There's not much difference b/w LW 4.0.8 & LW 4.0.9 See changes HERE (click on link) & 4.0.9 initial comment So the version you downlded will be 4.0.9 & ignore the installer version no. That's only the installer version not the version of LW it installs. It should improve things for you. :D

Yes uninstall the previous version 1st. It will only uninstall the the program folder nothing else! ;)
