Alternatives To Limewire IM RUNNING MAC OS 10.1.5, AND I HAVE HAD LIMEWIRE FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW, AND IM EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH. AND I WANNA KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER PEER 2 PEER PROGRAMS FOR MAC OS 10.1.5 OUT THERE BESIDES AQUISITON, AND XNAP. I DOWNLOADED XNAP BEFORE BUT FOR SUM REASON STUFFIT WOULDN'T EXPAND THE TAR.GZ. FILE(ANY1 KNOW Y?) SO IF ANY CULD GIVE ME ANY REQUESTS OR ANYTHING I WULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT, BECUASE LW GETS ON MY NERVES WHEN I TRY TO DOWNLOAD SUMTIN AND THAT "COULD NOT DOWNLOAD AWAITING SOURCES" CRAP COMES UP. |
I don't think there are a lot of apps for Mac out there that are better than LW except Xnap and Aquisition. There is an app called bittorrent (bitconjurer.org) which is really good. It's not really like other p2p's because you need links to download stuff. These links can be found a lot of places on the net but suprnova.org is the best place to find 'em. BitTorrent is extremely good for getting TV episodes and movies, but if you want music, then that is definetly not what you are looking for. If you have or are going to get Virtual PC, you can use Kazaa Lite etc. |
!.. Hello! Another alternative for Mac OSX users are also Direct Connect most famous for the fact that it is the best network to get movies and extremely large files downloaded. You can get it here: http://www.neo-modus.com However I dont think that you should give up on LimeWire and Gnutella just yeat. The Could Not Download Awaiting Sources message is not really a big problem. In previous versions of LW you would just get into Requery Sent status when a connection to a host you where downloading from got dropped. In 2.9X versions Requeries are no longer sent and you will get the new message instead. The solution to it is to first highlight the file and click the Kill Download button. This will temporarily delete the file from the download list but dont worrie it will come back just look after the file in the search result list and double click it again and once again the same file will appear in the download area and a new connection attempt will be made. If unsuccessfull you have to search for new sources for the file just use the exact seame search term as the filename and if the file is found from another source LW will attempt to connect to them instead and get it from there instead. If succesfull the file will get downloaded. You might sometimes have to perform the above described procedure multiple times during a download specially for large files but eventually you will get the file. Downloads on Gnutella simply have to get babysitted and attended!. |
RE HEY THX ALOT THE DIRECT CONNECT IS GREAT! I DOWNLOADED THE BITTORENT BUT THE WEBPAGE SUPRNOVA EVERY TIME I CLICK ON SUMTIN NOTHING HAPPENDS, MY BROWSER JUS TRYS TO KEEP LOADING THE PAGE. ARE THERE ANY OTHER SITES THAT U CAN GET LINKS 4 BITTORENT FROM, THAT WORK? |
Neo-Modus For what it's worth, my experience with Neo-Modus is not so good. When it works, you do get a steady upload/download streams but, in comparison with the PC equivalent, D++, Direct Connection is inefficient in making connection with other hosts. What compounds my problems is that there are no forums on which to get advice from the few other Mac users who are probably out there. And, so far, my e-mails to Neo-Modus asking very politely for help, have been ignored. So, as Joakim says, you might consider giving Direction Connection a try, but be prepared for just as much frustration as with Limewire. |
http://www.torrentlinks.com/ http://www.bittorrentsites.co.nr/ http://smiler.no-ip.org/BT/BTlinks.php These are some other BitTorrent sites. They also provide links to a lot of other Bittorrent sites. |
I DOWNLOADED SOME LINKS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY WHEN I TRY TO OPEN THEM WITH BITORRENT, THE APP QUITS UNEXPECTIVELY ALL THE TIME. DO U HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT MIGHT B CAUSING THIS PROBLEM? THX IN ADVANCE |
Damn, is that happening to you to? I thought it was just my stupid OS cause it unexpectedly quits mac help and stuff. It is really annoying so I think i'll e-mail the creator of the OS X version. |
HEY IF U FIGURE OUT HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM OR SUMTIN COULD YOU INFORM ON HOW TO FIX IT. THX |

Re: SEARCH RESULT LIST? Quote:
When you perform a search the results will come up in the window to the right. After you have performed several searches each search result list will be under individual tabs at the top of the search result window. I think that up to 8 searches will be saved then the oldest search list will be deleted when performing a 9'th search. When you are downloading something it will appear in the Download area/list and if for some reason the connection to the one you where downloading a file from got lost you will se the Could Not Download message. What you should do now is to highlight the particular file in the download area and click the Kill Download Button. Now look under the correct search tab that you found the file to download from and once again look up that particular file and then double click it and LW will now try to reconnect to the same host to se if it is still reachable and if it is LW will continue to download the file from where it left off. If not then you have to perform a new search with the same search term as the file name and if LW finds alternative sources for that file it will try to download it from there instead. If it does not find any you could just leave it there in the downloadlist and everytime you search for it LW will try to connect to the new sources and eventually you will get it. LW by default saves incomplete files in the Incomplete folder for 7 days before they get deleted. So you have 7 days by default to find it. After that then you have to start the download from the beginning(0%). |
Joachim Ah yes crossed wires here! I thought that there was a 'researchable' menu area that I was missing. Your technique can only apply if Limewire is left running for several days with no more than 8 search tabs active. I use the resume button under 'Library'-'Incomplete ' in any attempt to reactivate a connection. Unfortunately I've never had Limewire run for more than a day without hanging/requiring a restart. In point of fact I 'blame' L/Wire for causing Kernal panics. If left running overnight I almost invariably rise to the dreaded 'Restart message' Regards |
Hmmm Instead of getting this clearer, I think you have the wires twisted even more tightly. Let us take things to their simplest level. There are no automatic bells and whistles in Limewire. You have to do everything yourself. Although there is a Resume Button (and a hidden Force Resume) it does not work. There is no reconnect/re-search system. And leaving the machine for any length of time over one minute will not improve what you had at the end of one minute, Step One. Search and download from the hosts in your search box. If you show up with anything other than a positive connection, highlight the original host and the failed download and kill the download and restart the download. If this fails to produce a connection, abandon that host and go on to the next one until you find a live connection. Step Two. Management of the download. Most downloads stall so you have to be ready to go through the kill/restart download sequence every time it fails. For this purpose, you must keep the original listing under the appropriate tab in your search area. If it drops off because you do too many searches, you will not be able to restart your download. Use the manual delete (the little box with a cross in it on the tab) to manage your stored search results once you get to whatever maximum number of searches you have set in your Preferences. You have to play Limewire like a computer game. Passively watching it will not achieve anything. |
lets twist again Thanks for the advice David Twood appear I'm still @ the stage of typing with fists.......... Yet wait ...I've just gone to incomplete d/loads in the Library & 'resumed' a 6 day old search for Logic Platinum 6 OSX.sit. It reappeared within the Search list & proceeded to d/load 8% before reverting to C/N/D/load Await...etc. I often leave things to reconnect & d/load to completion with varying degrees of failure. I just disconnected/ reconnected to check Logic's current status- 'Waiting -- s for 1 busy' The remainder in my search list still 'await sources' Update: after 4hrs Logic now sits @ 12% |
Well, some progress Well, we have now moved on to the problem of the stalled download which is more difficult because you have lost the original source from the search box. One option, assuming that you have managed to reconnect from the incomplete file (which, incidentally, stores the address of the original host) is to use the "hidden" browse host. Once the download has begun, highlight the line in the downloads window and either option or command click (sorry I can't remember off-hand which it is). That will disclose a window menu in which one of the options is browse host. Of course, not all hosts are browsable but it does at least give you a second chance if the source stalls. Once you have the browsed source, highlight the object file in the search window, kill the download and restart the download. That usually reconnects you to the host and you can chase the download to an immediate and successful completion by restarting the download every time it stalls. Simply leaving it will never reconnect you. That facility was removed from Limewire several upgrades ago. The "awaiting sources" is simply warning you that you have to take action. |
Still ~D/Loading~ After remaining @12% for a few days Logic Platinum now sits @ 63% without any intervention on my part. |
