Limewire re-hashes every launch
 

Hi,

I am using Limewire 2.9.10.

The program crashes often with "Unexpectedly Quit" errors.

Whenever I relaunch, Limewire always re-hashes all my files. Startup is therefore really slow.

My understanding is that the file hashes are supposed to be saved in a cache, and not re-computed at every launch.

Anybody have any insight into what is causing this, and how it might be fixed?

It might be a problem with your config files (especially the fileurns.cache file) being write protected. You will find them in your ~/.limewire folder.

Unfortunately, every time you crash, you lose all the cached material and there's not a thing you can do about it. A crash is not the same as a Quit and Reload sequence when all the stored hashes and incompletes are reinstated from the caches.

It's sad that you have an unstable installation. My experience with 2.9.10 and OS10.2.6 was good with no crashes (unlike 2.9.8 which was a pain). I suggest that you purge your system (as described endlessly in other threads) and reinstall the latest version to see if that's any better. That may solve your problems.

I tried the purge you have so helpfully described on this forum, and will give it another go. I noticed that my hash cache file was created last December and last updated yesterday, so apparently Limewire has been trying to use the same cache file through multiple versions. Maybe sweeping it clean and starting fresh will help. Thanks for the tips.
