LimeWire Bounces in Dock, Then Disappears

One bounce in the dock, then NADA. Nothing. Zilch.

Uninstalled, reinstalled, downgraded to QuickTime 6.3. Zero.

FIX YOUR PHUCKING SOFTWARE!

sberlin October 22nd, 2003 02:31 PM

Some basic information, such as what version of LimeWire you're using, what version of OSX you're using, etc... would be relatively helping in helping us to fix our software.

Ass Hole October 22nd, 2003 03:39 PM

OS 10.2.8, LimeWire 3.6.6

Reply Reply October 22nd, 2003 04:44 PM

Same problem here. Never had any significant trouble with Limewire till I updated to 3.6.6. Now the icon just bounces once and quits. The previous version worked just fine. I'm running 10.2.8 as well...

Hey *** Hole

That really says it all, but your set-up and post suck. Use the search button or learn to be a Peer.

Have you figured out why it works for so many of us? Maybe that will tell you why yours doesn't.

You want attitude or help? Peers help Peers. Leeches are not welcome.

Reply Reply--did you see that Apple's QT 6.4 update coflicted with Java? Post back if you need the link to downgrade.

Otherwise, trash all existing LW stuff, including the dock icon and the preferences folder to get a clean start. Also, reboot holding down the Shift key after the starrtup chime to get into "Safe Boot" mode (this runs a repair check), and Repair Permissions on you hard drive using the Utilities->Disk Utilites program.

Reboot, download a fresh installer, and let us know if that works. It's the usual basic trouble-shooting routine.

If it doesn't, open the Utilities->Console and watch what kind of messages you get. Post those and maybe someone will have a better idea of what to try next.

Cheers--stief

i have had the same problem, it doesnt work on my 600 ibook, but does on my sisters 800 ibook... could it have to do with a limit on processor speed? my sis is running 10.2.8 os x, as am i, but i think she may have a slightly older version of limewire (working) on her computer. Maybe we should just all find the older version... or just screw limewire since they dont care about us os x users, and switch to somthing like Acquisition. Its faster, and easier to use, simple, everything. So, limewire, if you would like to keep your users, i suggest you work on this problem....

No. It works on my kid's 500iBook, my 700iBook, and our family 800G4 iMac, all running 10.2.8 w/o the QT upgrade

Find them here if you think that will help

Flamebait Bull. Read the Beta Announcements to see they work greatly on OSX. Don't forget they are the ONLY P2P team that still supports ALL Mac OS's from 8.6 and up, including 10.1 (Acq is only for 10.2 and up)
Quote:

More uninformed flamebait. Acq cannot have faster transfers and connections, since those speeds are controlled by the LimeWire core that it uses, as Dave will tell you if you are not ignored. Please--switch! Here's the link . Maybe you can help them with the problem of the downloads disappearing

You might find it better to spend more time giving details about your problem (sounds like the QT upgrade and router port-mapping improperly set up for multiple p2p servents).

I would like the link, please.

I'm having some weird problem with Java. I have the same computer at home and at work. Mac G4 400 MHz 512 MB RAM running 10.2.8. The one at work runs fine. On the one at home, Safari started crashing. LW ran for a day, then started crashing as soon as I updated to the pro version. This is why I think it's Java-related. It's the only thing the two misbehaving apps have in common.

Any helpful hints are welcome!

Thanks.

Hi Ernest: here's the link
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120255

btw--also keep an eye on http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120242 for when Apple will release a Java fix.

LW has recently caught and fixed some more bugs. Perhaps the beta version will help. See http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=22299 for more info.

Usually people have the opposite problem to yours: when they can't connect at work but can at home it often is firewall/router related. Any chance a firewall/router is involved at home?

Cheers--post back if . . .

LW crashes on start

OK, confirmed I have save version of QT and Java on both identical computers. LW crashes on start on home computer. Tried this:

Limewire installs, but won't start :(

Hey all,

I just installed OSX Wednesday and have been trying to get limewire to run for two days now; really frustrated here ...

MyMac: G4 400 MHz , OS 10.2.8
While trying to install and run Limewire 3.6.14_

already downgraded to QT 6.3
Safe Boot & Repaired Permissions
Trashed previous failed installs of LW stuff, redownloaded (at least half a dozen times, for pete's sake)

Still, every time I try to start it, the friggin thing gives an instant of a bounce in the dock then quits. It positively refuses to start.

Someone mentioned something about "console logs" in another similar post, dunno if it'll help but here's mine ...

Ernest: Could you please email me the crash logs (to be safe, delete the existing ones, try running LimeWire, and then email me the recreated one)? My address is sberlin@limepeer.com .

candyangel: Thank you for the detailed console logs, candyangel. If possible, could you run the installer again, but this time before closing it after it finishes, go to File -> Show Log, and save the output of the log to a file and then email me that file (or paste it here)?

Thanks,
Sam

Thanks for the speedy reply, candyangel.

They're very interesting logs. Somehow the default path for scripts on your computer has had "/usr/bin" removed from it. To fix this for LimeWire, go to your Applications folder, open the LimeWire folder, ctrl-click on LimeWire and choose 'Show Package Contents', open the Contents folder, open the MacOS folder, cntr-click on 'prelude', choose Open With -> Other, and scroll down on the right and choose 'TextEdit'.

In this file, underneath the first line that reads "#!/bin/sh", add a line that reads: "PATH=/usr/bin:$PATH" without the quotes.

So the first two lines of the file should read:
#!/bin/sh
PATH=/usr/bin:$PATH

Then save that file and try opening LimeWire again.

That should hopefully fix your problem. We'll make changes to our installers to ensure that this line is added to the scripts if necessary, although this probably won't make it in the 3.6 series.

Let me know how that works please.

Thanks,
Sam

Sam --

And thank you for the quick replies too!

I tried it, but no change - Limewire still opens for the barest of an instant, bounces once in the dock, then quits.

Somehow the default path for scripts on your computer has had "/usr/bin" removed from it.

Oh, that does NOT sound good. How could that have happened? What can I do about that?

It didn't work? That's wierd. It looks like you might not even have the correct commands installed in the correct place. Frankly, I'm not positive how serious that is, but I imagine other things would fail too. How was OSX installed on your computer, by an upgrade or as a fresh installation? You might want to consider fixing your disk permissions using Disk Utility (under Applications, Utilities, Disk Utility).

If possible, could you open a terminal by going to Applications -> Utilities, and opening 'Terminal'? Then type the following commands at the terminal's prompt:

sh
echo $PATH
exit
cd /usr
ls
ls -1 bin | wc -l

If you could email the results to me ( sberlin@limepeer.com ) that'd be very useful.

Thanks,
Sam

The computer is a few years old. But this is a brand new, fresh outta the box Maxtor hard drive. It was installed Saturday night. For a starting OS, I installed 9.0.4. Upgraded to 9.1, 9.2.1, & 9.2.2. Also did the firmware, etc. upgrades.

Sunday Night I installed a copy of OSX 10.0.3, which was updated to 10.0.4 with software updater. The OS was from a borrowed CD that came with my friends iMac. I played around with 10.0.4 for a few days just to to kinda get used to it and see how I wanted my files organized, etc. while waiting for my copy of Jaguar to get here.

Wednesday night I installed 10.2 which upgraded to 10.2.8 with software updater. This was a 2 cd retail package thing in a white box.

Disk permissions were fixed this afternoon, but I'll run it again if you think it'll help.

Terminal log emailed to you. :)

Hi

The Mac OS X 10.0.x Installer din't installed the BSD Subsystem by default. The user had to set the checkbox manually. So if you made an upgrade from 10.0.x to 10.2.x it is very likely that the BSD Subsystem wasn't installed either.

Does the following file exists on you Mac?

Your Mac OS X drive -> Library -> Receipts -> BSD.pkg

If not, insert the 1st Mac OS X disk and double click the following file.

Mac OS X Install Disc 1 -> System -> Installation -> Packages -> BSD.pkg

yay!

the bsd installation worked for me -- i was having the same issues as the other folks (one bounce in 10.2.8, etc.), but all is back to normal, running LW 3.6.14 just fine. thanks for the great info!!

Ernest November 8th, 2003 06:05 AM

Hello, sberlin. I tried the above instructions (adding the PATH... line), but I'm afraid it made no difference. LW continues to crash at startup. It starts and crashes as soon as I tell the tip of the day to go away.

I can't post the crash log here as it is too long. However, I will e-mail it as suggested in the earlier message.

Thanks,
Ernest

editing prelude didn't help

Just upgraded to Pro (3.6.14), am running OS X 10.2.8. Downgraded to QT 6.3, performed a clean boot, repaired permissions, etc.

My install logs are virtually identical to candyangel's -- and editing the prelude script didn't fix the problem -- any other ideas?

worked for me too!

sorry I didn't see that post before I posted my last complaint :-)

sberlin November 8th, 2003 08:04 PM

We'll be adding a workaround to future installers to ensure that LimeWire will run on systems that do not have the BSD subsystem installed. However, I strongly suggest that you do install it, as there are most likely many other programs out there that rely on this information.

Ernest November 9th, 2003 10:39 AM

Confirmed that BSD *is* installed on my G4. Still having problems starting LW.

candyangel November 10th, 2003 05:06 AM

It works!

rkpasi, THANK YOU so much for your help. The BSD install seemed to fix the problem for me. Limewire is now working fine under OS 10.2.8.

Sam, thanks so much for helping as well. It's good to know future versions won't require BSD. When I went through the reinstall, it said "you only need to install BSD if you are installing the developers package". So I didn't bother. Maybe that's why it doesn't install as a default?
Ah well, At least I know what happened now.

Ernest, I hope your problem gets sorted out soon. I'm sure someone will figure out something.

This forum has a great bunch of helpful people, and I want to thank everyone for their help.

~Candy
