Default LimeWire 3.6.6 Trouble with OS 10.1.5

I notice that a lot of people, like me, are having trouble with LimeWire 3.6.6 and OS 10.1.5. I was successfully running the basic version of 3.6.6 and decided to upgrade and hand over my hard earned for the Pro version. Big mistake.

Since downloading and installing 3.6.6 pro I've had no luck running LimeWire whatsoever. Launching the application directly or via the desktop alias or dock results in it quitting almost immediately - the console reports an error 2857. I've tried numerous clean installs and just about everything suggested by the kind folks on this board replying to those with the same / similar problems. Pro support is looking into the problem but haven't come up with any answers yet...

Even downloading and installing the old basic version I was successfully running 3 days ago results in the same problem. I only decided to upgrade because the long list of connections I was getting originally when running basic had suddenly turned into a paltry 4 every time I fired up Limewire...

I'm running OS 10.1.5 on a 600mhz G3 iBook with 384mb of RAM. Not sure what version of Java is installed, but it's as fresh as it gets according to the Apple Software Update which lists no improvements.

Any help very much appreciated. Cheers guys.

Hi anon

Sorry to hear about this bug again--looks like you've made a more than reasonable attempt to track it down and fix it. I guess you already emailed the Console entries, contacted Pro Support, and have seen the links to the past versions of LW.

In the meantime you may want to give Jens-Uwe Mager's most recent build of LW a try: it includes the latest CVS changes (3.6.7).

btw--don't worry about the number in the connections list: that depends on whether your code calculates if it's better to run as a leaf or an Ultrapeer--searches and transfers are basically the same under either mode.

If you did a really clean install by searching and trashing the preferences folder (if you used a really old LW before, also search for invisble files containing "limew"), you'll always start out as a leaf until you build up whatever stats are needed (like uptime, bandwidth, and the ability to accept incominng connections) to determine if your connection is suitable for an ultrapeer. Sometimes, after running for a couple of hours, if you choose disconnect, and then connect, you can help regain Ultrapeer status.

btw--have you tried creating a new Admin user and installing LW there? That's the best way to isolate User set-up problems. A second idea is to reinstall Java with the stand-alone updater from Apple. That used to solve some java problems for me.

Do post back if something works--looks like quite a few will be grateful.

We are currently aware of the problem with LimeWire 3.6.6 and OSX 10.1. We have reverted the downloadable version to 3.5.8 until Monday, when we can fix the problem as a new release.

The reason LimeWire is failing to open is because of a bug in OSX 10.1 that disallows application bundles from having a shell script as the executable. Unfortunately, LimeWire switched in 3.6.6 to using a shell script as the executable to fix the "too many open files" error which many users have reported.

If you would like to continue using 3.6.6, you can follow the instructions below.

--

1) Go to Go -> Applications.
2) Open the LimeWire folder.
3) Control-Click on the 'LimeWire' application and choose 'Show Package Contents'.
4) Open the 'Contents' folder.
5) Double-click on the 'Info.plist' file.

If nothing happens (or an error comes up saying that it doesn't know what Application to use to open the file) then follow the steps 6 through 12. Otherwise (if it opens up in a program called "Property List Editor", follow steps 13 through 17.

6) Control-click on Info.plist and choose "Open With" and then "Other".
7) In the 'Choose Application' dialog, make sure 'Show' is set to 'Recommended Applications' and 'From' is set to 'Applications'.
8) Scroll down on the right and choose 'TextEdit'.
9) In TextEdit, find the line that reads "<key>CFBundleExecutable</key>", and right below it should read "<string>prelude</string>".
10) Change the word prelude to 'LimeWire' so that the line reads "<string>LimeWire</string>" [without the quotes].
11) Then choose the File menu and Save.
12) Open up LimeWire!

13) Expand 'Root' so that it lists a bunch of other information.
14) Locate the line that says "CFBundleExecutable" on the left and "prelude" on the right.
15) Double-click on the word "prelude" and change it to say "LimeWire".
16) Click the File menu and choose Save.
17) Open Up LimeWire!

We're sorry about the problem. A new release will be available early Monday so that you don't have to follow these instructions in order to take advantage of the new features in 3.6.

Thanks,
Sam

Cheers Stief

I've tried JUM's build and that just refuses to run (looks for an appropriate application to launch it with for some reason... Java related I suspect). To be honest, I've coughed up the cash for the Pro version and I want to make sure I end up running it, otherwise LimeWire should be handing it back to me. I'm sure they've had enough complaints on the subject by now...

As you guessed, I've followed all other suggestions and threads already, with the exception of installing again under another user account, so I'll try that out ASAP and get back with the result.

Do you have a link to the Java installer you mention? I'm probably being dense, but I can't find reference to the right thing on the Apple site.

Once again, thanks again for your help on this one...

Ah! Thanks Sam.

I'll try that and eagerly await Monday's release. I take it all back, you can keep my money!

Thanks All.

PS. It'd be good for everyone suffering the same problems if Sam's info could be posted up in the relevant place by someone with authority. Can anyone make a permanent post of it?

Sam - Thanks. Just downloaded and installed the older version you've made available and it runs fine. Only thing, 'Connections' cannot be selected from the 'Navigation' menu. Not really a problem I guess if a working 3.6.6 is available from Monday. Impressed with the service now! Thanks very much.

Steif - Re. the number of connections; I only have a cable/dsl service, so why would I be seeing connections numbering around 50+ one day and suddenly just 4 the next? I didn't think that there would be any possibility of being an UltraPeer with that connection. You seem like the man with all the answers around here, so if you could educate me, I'd really appreciate it. I think they should put you on the payroll. Cheers!

Thanks again all.

I don't have any more answers than Sam, trap_jaw, Jens-Uwe and others like et voilą have given me. It's a pretty good community of users and coders and developers all helping each other.

Anyway, 50+ means you were running as an UP; 4 is more than enough for a leaf. DSL, thanks to the improvements in LW, is enough to run as an UP. Sam will be able to tell you much more. Easiest is just to let the code decide

As for the Java installer--my old link didn't work, but LOL, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120242 says
Quote:
We are in the process of revising the Java 1.4.1 download to provide better compatibility with changes made in other recent Apple software updates.

Check back here for up-to-date information on the status of the Java 1.4.1. download.
I think this thread will help others now that Sam has given a fix. Perhaps Apple will pay more attention to Java developers like LW when they point out problems!

Hey, I was just curious about sberlin's method of fixing the problem with 10.1. He mentioned that once you double-click on the 'Info.plist' file, you expand 'Root' so that it lists a bunch of other information. How do you expand the Root? When I double-click on the .plist file it gives me a message that it doesn't know what application to use for the file.

Sorry about that, Zenimus. It is probably because I have the Developer Tools installed on my Mac.

Another method of editting the file is to control-click on Info.plist and choose "Open With" and then "Other". In the 'Choose Application' dialog, make sure 'Show' is set to 'Recommended Applications' and 'From' is set to 'Applications'. Scroll down on the right and choose 'TextEdit'. Find the line that reads "<key>CFBundleExecutable</key>", and right below it should read "<string>prelude</string>". Change the word prelude to 'LimeWire' so that the line reads "<string>LimeWire</string>" [without the quotes]. Then choose the File menu and Save.

I'll edit my above post to include this information ...

Thanks,
Sam
