i am pretty sure i have the updated java though because when i run system updater it doesn't find anything to update, and that should be posted...

the exact message in the terminal was:

...it really just said bus error.

Looks that way. I do know that Apple had a ton of problems with the release of Panther and Java upgrades -- we've been pulling our hair out over the issues we've had to work around. Installing the update as downloaded from their website won't hurt anything, especially if Java is broken already. It can only potentially help.

Please let us know how it goes after installing the update.

thanks for your help! at least now i know what the problem is

thanks sberlin!! it worked! It didn't update the entire java app for some reason (i checked the log this time!) but there were definitely updates and it has made all the difference!
