I have been running Limewire for a short while now and I am noticing that it is slowing my MAC down to a crawl. I have run Norton... and several other Maint. programs... It makes no difference... if Limewire is on... It is slow as heck. I have change the settings to not allow uploads and it still is sloooooooow. I am about to give up on limewire... can anyone help?

which OS version are you using? If you can give more details that will help.

'slow' can be for many reasons (not just uploads).

btw--Norton on OSX! That's brave--I hope they fixed the problems that scared many who were confident with Norton on OS 9, but suffered when using it on OSX (see http://www.macintouch.com/systemworks2.html , or just search www.macintouch.com for 'norton'

Thanks for responding! I am using OX 10.2.8. What I mean by slow is that my entire computer slows down. Other applications run extremely slow. The downloads themselves don't seem to be affected at all. Just my system as a whole. I have tried only having Limewire and one small app running... it is still unbearably slow. I have pleanty of memory.. over 20 gigs on my hard drive and 768K of ram. My computer is a new IMAC G4. It was not like this about a month ago. It ran limewire just fine with up to five other apps running at the same time. I have all new updates as I am on a Cable modem and my computer pretty much takes care of itself as all Macs do. Is this enough info???? I tried looking on the Mac site and couldn't really find any useful info.

That helps narrow down the problem. You've got plenty of RAM and lots of disk space, so it would be something is using up your processor.

To see what apps or processes that are keeping the computer busy, check your Process Viewer (in your Applications/Utilities folder). On my G3, with LW 3.7.8 Pro Beta, LW uses ~30-60% of the CPU. That's sharing >1000 files, running as an Ultrapeer (60-some hosts showing in the Connections Pane).

With a G4, your Process Viewer should show LW using less.

If your CPU use is more, restart your machine and hold down the Shift key just after the startup to reboot in Safe Boot mode. This will turn off any 3rd party extensions . Run LW and Process Viewer again and check the CPU % again.

Any significant difference?

I did as you sugested and can't tell what the problem may be. The process monitor shows it using between 30 and 40%. At times less and a couple times more. However, my system is not running slow at the moment. That is what is so odd. There are times it runs fine and times when it is slower than the U.S. mail. I will keep my eye on it and see if I can detect a pattern. Thanks for your help!

Since safe boot mode disables some extensions (like some of Norton's stuff), that could explain the difference.

Some other things to keep an eye on:
Running as an Ultrapeer (see the Connections Pane) uses about 4KB/s of upstream bandwidth (see Tools->Statistics->Bandwidth). "sample Bug Report" in the Preferences can also give you more details.

It's a good idea to set the upload limit to ~80% of your upstream bandwidth. That way you still have bandwidth for mail, browsing, and other internet activities. If you are not sure of your upstream bandwidth, try the free java tests on http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest
