Slows my IMAC down terribly

I have been running Limewire for a short while now and I am noticing that it is slowing my MAC down to a crawl. I have run Norton... and several other Maint. programs... It makes no difference... if Limewire is on... It is slow as heck. I have change the settings to not allow uploads and it still is sloooooooow. I am about to give up on limewire... can anyone help?
