limewire for osX disconnects my cable modem When I run Limewire for osX...latest versions, and either 10.2.x or Panther, it runs fine until I go to quit. When I quit of if it crashes, it disconnects me somehow from the net. The cable modem, a motorola surfboard, looks like it's online, but it seems I am disconnected from the dns server at that point. In order to fix this, I have to unplug and restart my modem, and usually restart my machine as well. |
i having the same problem When I connect, it cuts off my modem and I have to put my computer to sleeep so that it resets the internet connection thing. (OSX 10.1.5) |
Absolutely the same problem here! Even after buying the newest version of limewire pro, everytime I want to start it it disconnects my DSL-Modem. I have to unplug it to get it back working. Can someone please help??? |
Salut ą tous, sometimes modems don't like upstream saturation which means that you upload at the capacity of you line. Go in options or preferences and select upload -basic - and move the slider 2-5KB/s less than you upload capacity. You can go to dslreports.com to determine your upload speed in the tools section (be sure to not run other thing than your browser then). The speed will be given in Kb/s you have to do a conversion of speed with a factor of 8 ie 100kps /8 = 12,5 KB/s, then you put the upload limit to 10KB/s by moving the slider in preferences. Bonne chance |
Thanks for your trying to help. I tried turning down the upload speed, i put it 5 kb under the maximum speed, but it still disconnects my modem. Any other ideas? |
Bon, ok, there is another possibility.... You have a poor (read shitty modem) that doesn't like when you are running as an ultrapeer (too much connections). See under the statistics (in the tool menu) - network - the number under "active connections" should be under 6, if it says around 30 connections , you are an UP, you can change that in options - speed -desactivate UP capacity- check the box and click apply... Bonne chance :p |
I think I found something! I“m working with MacOS X Panther. Trying this and that I noticed, that everytime I started Limewire from the original Start button and leave it in the LW Folder, it worked. Having the folder closed and trying to open limewire from the alias in the dock, it disconnected the modem. Can that really be it? I tried it a couple of times and that“s how it always worked. |
 I don't see the link between the two actions and your modem... Are you on USB modem, I think it is probably your problem, if not there is something wrong with you panther installation! ;) Ciao |
I'm also experiencing big difficulties on my Mac running OSX 10.1.5 :-( My internet connection gets screwed up after starting LimeWire 3.8.5 Basic, and now I'm even having trouble connecting to IRC, using Ircle and Snak. I can connect to the IRCnetwork but can't join a channel, unless I quickly disconnect from the internet and reconnect. I'd like to know what changes LimeWire made when I installed it, cos this is getting very annoying :-( |
limewire and cable modems...disconnect on quit well, even after a complete reinstall on a new harddrive, limewire still disconnects me from the net when I quit the program...it will also cancel restart/shutdown if it is still running when I restart...HOWEVER...I found that if I hit the standby button on the modem when I quit limewire, it does NOT disconnect my cable modem. I have a motorola surfboard modem SB4200E . so as long as I remember to do that, it goes ok. don't know if that will do any good for those with startup disconnects. Jeanne |
Disconnect on startup I run 10.2---LW 3.6.15 used to run fine---I installed 3.6.8 and now LW causes my internet connection to be lost--I tried reloading my old version but it now disconnect me from the internet also---I have asked for help from LW Support twice but so far no reply--- |
I also asked for support and they don“t answer. Please tell me if you get a reply first. I now got the old version 3.8.14 ,I think, from a friend of mine, which works fine. But this is not why I bought the Pro Version, so I hope they“ll come up with a solution or a new release of limewire soon! |
Don't upgrade I upgraded from Limewire 3.6.15 (which worked great) to 3.8.7 (because they told me to!) and I was disconnected from my wireless network. No firewall. I changed nothing. I found an old version 3.5.8 at http://www.idg.pl/ftp/pobierz/mac/181.html, which works fine. Don't forget to dump your duff LW preferences in HD, Library, Limewire too. |
OSX 10.3.2, LW 3.8.7 & Cable Modem Disconnect Hi, for what it's worth, my Motorola SB4200 Cable Modem also disconnects upon launch of LW Pro 3.8.7 on a G5 running OSX 10.3.2. I determined that if I remember to trash the LimeWire folder from Users/MyName/Library/Preferences, BEFORE launching LW, then I can use the program (once) after running thru its setup dialogs (again). Specifically, there's a file called "installation.props" that the program installs that seems to be the problem, tho deleting just that one file doesn't always solve the re-launch disconnect as effectively as trashing the entire LW prefs folder. |
Same problem here I'm having the same problem. On a Mac G5 running OSX 10.3.3 (no firewire), using version 3.8.7, basic, high speed internet cable. Limewire previously caused disconnection of my modem only upon quitting out of the application, now it disconnects from the network upon launching the program too. VERY frustrating!! (have to shut down, unplug modem then restart computer). Sometimes I remove just the preferences, sometimes the entire program, then reinstall. Works for a while (no problem on start-up), but still disconnects when I quit. Any new news about this? Just noticed that there's an upgrade to Limewire-version 3.8.9. Does anyone know if they addressed this issue with this new version? Also, can I install the new version of Limewire without removing the older one? Does it just upgrade the existing one? By the way, tried everything mentioned above by the moderator, still didn't work. Would really appreciate any help here, or any experiences with 3.8.9. I think this is a terrific program when it works!! |
Installing Version 4.0.5 fixed this entire problem for me. Hope others are having the same luck. Thanks Limewire!! |
We're posting the exact same problem on a thread just below here. Was almost convinced it was a hardware problem until I read all the post here. The only thing that has 'worked' is limiting my downloads to one at a time, but even then that only works for an extra couple of minutes. I'm running 4.1.1 and I've had this problem since i upgraded from 3.8. Oh look, I've had LW running for all of 6 minutes while i typed this and my connection went on me....... Sorry but how can it be a hardware problem if (as it seems) everyone's getting this problem with the latest round of Limewire? |
Limewire with OSX internet disconnects!! I have been looking for an answer to a problem many of us have been having, running Limewire, gettinmg started and then although Limewire seems to keep working, THE INTERNET CONNECTION stops working. The n its reboot the cable modem time!!!! DAMN!!! Well here is some info to add to the fire of discussion. I was so mad at Limewire for this problem that I downloaded the newest revision of Acquistion (only for Mac I think) and quess whta , THE EXACT i mean THE EXACT same problem, works fine , getting some downloads and DAMN the internet goes off and I am resetting and cursing the Cable modem again. So this is not just Limited to Limewire, but perhaps all peer to peer software??? Which means , maybe the internet provider compnay ( In my case EArthlink cable modem - Roadrunner)?? Any help on this matter, this problem only started about 4-6 months ago for several years earlier NEVER a disconnect problem (even with roadrunner). HELP!!! |
If that is indeed the case, then all you have to do is contact Roadrunner and ask them if they have recently implemented a "countermeasure" against P2P. |
