I'm a complete newbie: Mac OSX, LimeWire 4.0. How do I find out what uploads have taken place from my computer?

Hi Eric--and welcome.

There are several ways. The easiest is to look at the columns in the Library pane, where each file in the Library will have stats for the hits (file matched some incoming search query), and the completed/attempted column for uploads.

You can also look at the Monitor Pane and see uploads progressing (by default the list clears on completion, but you can change that in prefs).

For even more info, turn on the "Advanced" statistics in tools.

What does it mean when a backslash ("\") appears by itself as a line in the Incoming Searches Monitor? I thought it might indicate a search with no keywords, but apparently such searches are impossible.

You're right that such are not allowed in LW as a regular keyword expression, but there are many clients on many platforms accessing the gnutella network. I suspect they are characters sent as part of a longer or special query, but if you need a definitive answer, look for posts by verdyp.
