mac or pc program?

I'm new to LimeWire- Is there a way to tell if a program is Mac or PC before download?

If the file type is .exe then it's likely to be a PC program since macs either use no extension (hidden) or .app

Similarly, in general for compressed files:

.sit - likely to be mac (Stuffit);

.zip - likely to be PC (WinZip/PKZIP)
