Default Unstable LimeWire, "Upgrade to LimeWire pro!" window crashing it most likely......

I have a eMac running OSX running Verision 10.2.8. Limewire seems to crash upon opening as soon as I click any of the options in the pop up window for limewire pro after startup. Although I found that if I'm in Finder, and don't have any finder windows showing, that upon start up, in the background the search box will have the text icon flashing. If I wait till I get connected, and type in something and search for it, wait for most of the search to load, and then, after I have searched, that I can click the "later" option or any option seems to work and at that point ussualy will load up the tip and then allow me access to everything else without crashing. Otherwise, after click an option, it will crash if I have not searched for something yet. It sometimes can take a few tries to get it to boot up with the text selector icon [So that I may type text in, being I'm not allowed to click anywhere outside of the upgrade to pro box"] in the search box. I don't know anything about my Java and such, cause I know that can cause a few problems. I also tried reinstalling it. I also tried opening console while it crashes, and I don't know how to read it exactaly, but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary with any other crashes. Its kinda a pain, so if you can offer any help I'd be grateful. Also, anytime I try to play a windows media file, it opens explorer to a windows page that says I don't have a V7 Compatable driver or something, I downloaded VLC, but I haven't tested it yet. Thanks for any help you can offer....

Step 1: There was recently somebody who complained of slow speed to type into LW's search box. They had an eMac with just 128 MB RAM. I think the minimum requirement of OS X is 128 MB ram! That doesn't leave much ram for anything else. Go check how much ram u have, go to the apple icon at the very top left corner, press, select About this Mac, then press more info & select the 1st on list (ram). This will tell u how much u have. eMacs have 2 memory slots & can have up to 1 GB ram.

Step 2: If u feel ram is not your issue, make sure your Java is up to date. Go to System Prefs & press Software Update. Once it scans, if it shows Java on the list, tick it & update

If u still feel these are not the answers to your problems get back to us. If steps 1 & 2 don't apply/fix your problem try the following: Step 3 (press link) or if still problems try Step 4 (press link) Tell us how you go.

I tried I think everything you said, to no avail. I'm also running 256 RAM, so, I believe that is enough. Any other ideas....

Well if you've run all the utilities suggested & nothing wrong can be found & no there's improvement to LW, then try using the LW 4.1.5 Beta & see if this makes any difference.

Personally I'm a great believer in RAM & believe u can never have too much. Perhaps that's from my experiences with some earlier macs. Still, if you're confident 256 is enough I won't argue with that. But I'd suggest u don't run any other apps initially whilst using LW until some solution can be found.

In any case, go to your Utilities folder & locate & open Activity Monitor after having opened LW. Add up all the individual Real Memory items listed on the right hand side of the Activity Monitor window. Post back what your total is. Also list how much LW uses. This will help us to eliminate memory as an issue.

I'm curious to see if the beta will make a difference. I use both 4.0.4 & 4.1.4 beta.

I just checked my ram usage for LW & it's using over 120 MB ram yet I'm not even dwnlding (someone's uplding.) 2 hrs ago it was using 80 MB. I haven't even done a search since it's been on. (A couple of files did dwnld earlier.)

I couldn't find an "Activity Moniter" in utilities, or on my hard drive for that matter, but I did find a process viewer, and there was a "% Memory" so here are the results
LW= Around 34.40%, 35.00%
All processes total including LW= Around 67.63%

And my Computer Moniter stayed pretty high sometimes during limewire

I'll try out the beta

Thx

I should've asked this at this beginning but specifically which OSx version are you using & which Java version?

10.2.8, [Not panther], and Java 1.4.1, because the new Java update on apple's web site was for panther, not jaguar. [I really should get panther, -sigh-] Anyways I tried the beta and no luck so far, infact I haven't been able to get it to boot with the cursor in the search box anyways. Its weird that it works fine up until you click an opition in that pop up box. And that if you begin a search, and then click and opition in the pop up box it works fine after that. I don't get it.....

Salut Fox,
1)first step is to reinstall java there as maybe your java went corrupted: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...formacosx.html

2)see if LW works, if not reinstall completly LW (delete the LW prefs first in the yourusername/library/preferences)

3)if not download Phex and tell us if the Gui is working (phex is another gnutella app based on java) http://phex.kouk.de/download.php

4)if not, well I'll see later

Bonne chance

It was pointed out to me that you should also do a safe boot before and after the java reinstall.

Do you use Classic mode at all? (ie: OS9)

I tried reinstalling Java, and the only odd thing was it loaded up kinda fast and I didn't get any confirm, but assuming that went ok it still didn't fix my proablems. I didn't safe boot though, but I may try that very soon. I reinstalled Java with no luck. Also, phex didn't work too well, it only connected to ultrapeers, and it would crash upon trying to conduct a search. I use OS 9 if I use a program in it, which these days is very often but I do use it if I need to. Thanks for the help.
