Have you repaired permissions & run Disk Utility (& any 3rd party if you have them such as DiskWarrior, TechTool, Norton, etc.) See about this: See this link for permissions (click me.)

Xcuse me for asking, but where have you located your dwnld folder (ie: path)? Check the folder (cmd+i) & double-check the write permissions.) If preferencing & Java are not the answer/problem then I'm a bit stumped! Do you have the english/international version (this shouldn't make any diff unless you installed the earlier version of Java that comes with the intern'l version.

"LimeWire was unable to open the incomplete file for the selected download because the file name contains characters which are not supported by your operating system" I must ask why would it refer to 'opening' the file? My very 1st impression was that it couldn't move it to the dwnld folder for that reason. There must be a reason why the error message refers to 'opening'! When a file has completed dwnlding, then all LW needs to do is 'move' it from the incomplete folder to the dwnld folder. Something doesn't quite add up here.

I presume that's a firewire drive. Have you attempted to change (at least temporarily) the LW dwnld folder to your main HDD? I have a suspicion this may lead to an answer. Try this, why not after these probs so far, & post back your results. Even if yu only have a small amount available on yur main hdd, it will at least assist in showing where the issue may lie.

Is the name of the external drive much "longer" than the boot drive?

Could you test to see if the same thing happens if the Shared and Incomplete folders resided on the boot drive, or if the preview works with a very short file name?

(some people also had trouble if the external drive was disconnected/reconnected/spun down during a single session)

actualy, the error messages started appearing when the download folder used to be in the main HD last week. i made the switch to firwire because my main drive was very low on memory and i thought that might be a reason to the problem since i was trying to download a big video clip. anyhow the issue might be somewhere deep os 10.2.8.. should i upgrade to panther?..

would you like me to go back to the main HD?. let me know..

thnx

hani

If the error existed earlier then that's prob'ly not the issue. I 'think' I started using LW 4 before I upgraded to panther. That was amost 6 mths ago. It might solve it, it might not. Have you tried the Beta (LW 4.1.5)? Using the beta has solved 'some' people's probs.

As LOTR says, if you've already followed Murasame's advice with the clean install on the default volume, then you already know the external drive is not the factor. Still, it would be good to keep it out of the situation until you've nailed this problem.

Freeing up space on the boot drive is a good idea (btw--a 10 minute shutdown should clear all the Virtual Memory and also free up space).

Panther is good--but sounds like overkill for your problem. Free up some disk space, then create a new user with admin privileges first, and install LW (reg or beta) in that account before you try drastic measures like system reinstalls/major upgrades.

cheers
