downloading error hello, im using Limewire Pro, on a g3 powerbook running osx10.2.8. when dbl clicking on any file (video, audio, prog) to download, i always get this following error: "LimeWire was unable to open the imcomplete file for the selected download becuase the file name contains characters which are not supported by your operating system" i keep getting this even with files that i have been able to download in the past , which gave me a clue that this error message is not accurate. i have been using Limewire basic on the same computer for a long time.. when i got this same error above in basic i decided to purchase Pro just in case it might solve this problem, i just realized i was wrong.. i inspected the preferences but there is nothing that addresses this issue.. can you please help , anybody. best hani |
Just open them "manually". Go to your Home directory in the Finder (the one that was initially named after you, you know, the one with the little house icon...) and enter the realm of the Shared folder *haunting music*. That is where all finished dlds go. The one that is real close to it, named Incomplete is for the ones that are, well, incomplete. It also contains the downloads.dat and downloads.bak files (which may appear as if open-able by a variety of applications, from quicktime and iTunes, to Stuffit and other crazy $hit) as well as the Preview files. Aside from the later, none can be opened. Returning to the "problem" at hand, go to the Shared folder and try opening files from there. Actually, always open them from there. |
download error thnx for the reply and help.. i dont think i was clear in my last post.. i get that message when i try to download a file . i dont get that message when i try to play an already downloaded file.. basicaly what im saying is that im not able to download.. the error message appears when double clicking on your choice to download. the error message is very strange becuase it gives you the impression that i have the file already in the Shared folder. |
Probably won't do you any good (and you must surely have tried it too) but don't double-click on them. Click then push the Dld button. If it don't work, open Finder and run a search for LW and erase everything. Then go to the site and reldld it. Reinstall. See what happens. |
I went ahead with your advise . i searched LW and trashed it all.. then reinstalled Pro but unfortunatly, the same error came up when i pressed the download buton.. this is very strange.. LimeWire is working fine connecting , searching and finding files but does not download... i ran DiskUtilities and repaired permissions. but no luck.. i'm not sure how to proceed.. help again |
Go to the Incompletes folder in the Finder (I explained before how to get there) and delete everything. Even the two downloads.bak and .dat files. (Don't delete the folder. Only the content) You will now have no incomplete downloads and anything you were dlding will be gone. Try dlding something now. Alos, do you have the latest Java? Run Software update to see (you probably do, so you may have to uninstall that too and reinstall it, but don't do that yet. Post back first) |
ok, I deleted everything in the Incomplete folder.. i restarted Pro and one more fricking time. i got the error message again .. same exact message posted above. im getting frustrated .. hmmmmm |
'Might' be due to Locale Preferencing. Go to LW's Prefs (under the LW name at top left on screen) & select Advanced & Locale Preferencing. Make sure that the option box is ticked. Otherwise you might be receiving 'other' language data. Why might this have changed suddenly, who knows, you might have accidentally pressed the revert to default. Just a thought. |
In the case this is a Java error (might have gotten corrupt or something), uninstall it the go to www.java.com and dld and re-install. Trash preferences, possibly run Disk utility and restore permissions and try relaunching LW again. |
Preferences checked.. reinstalled java, .. and no luck.. one more thing might help you out with this.. : when i select a file then press download, the bottom half "Downloads" opens as usual then the selected file apears as usual too but then quickly the progress bar shoots up to 100% and finally, the error message apears all within one second. i hope this helps.. |
