downloading error hello, im using Limewire Pro, on a g3 powerbook running osx10.2.8. when dbl clicking on any file (video, audio, prog) to download, i always get this following error: "LimeWire was unable to open the imcomplete file for the selected download becuase the file name contains characters which are not supported by your operating system" i keep getting this even with files that i have been able to download in the past , which gave me a clue that this error message is not accurate. i have been using Limewire basic on the same computer for a long time.. when i got this same error above in basic i decided to purchase Pro just in case it might solve this problem, i just realized i was wrong.. i inspected the preferences but there is nothing that addresses this issue.. can you please help , anybody. best hani |
Just open them "manually". Go to your Home directory in the Finder (the one that was initially named after you, you know, the one with the little house icon...) and enter the realm of the Shared folder *haunting music*. That is where all finished dlds go. The one that is real close to it, named Incomplete is for the ones that are, well, incomplete. It also contains the downloads.dat and downloads.bak files (which may appear as if open-able by a variety of applications, from quicktime and iTunes, to Stuffit and other crazy $hit) as well as the Preview files. Aside from the later, none can be opened. Returning to the "problem" at hand, go to the Shared folder and try opening files from there. Actually, always open them from there. |
download error thnx for the reply and help.. i dont think i was clear in my last post.. i get that message when i try to download a file . i dont get that message when i try to play an already downloaded file.. basicaly what im saying is that im not able to download.. the error message appears when double clicking on your choice to download. the error message is very strange becuase it gives you the impression that i have the file already in the Shared folder. |
Probably won't do you any good (and you must surely have tried it too) but don't double-click on them. Click then push the Dld button. If it don't work, open Finder and run a search for LW and erase everything. Then go to the site and reldld it. Reinstall. See what happens. |
I went ahead with your advise . i searched LW and trashed it all.. then reinstalled Pro but unfortunatly, the same error came up when i pressed the download buton.. this is very strange.. LimeWire is working fine connecting , searching and finding files but does not download... i ran DiskUtilities and repaired permissions. but no luck.. i'm not sure how to proceed.. help again |
Go to the Incompletes folder in the Finder (I explained before how to get there) and delete everything. Even the two downloads.bak and .dat files. (Don't delete the folder. Only the content) You will now have no incomplete downloads and anything you were dlding will be gone. Try dlding something now. Alos, do you have the latest Java? Run Software update to see (you probably do, so you may have to uninstall that too and reinstall it, but don't do that yet. Post back first) |
ok, I deleted everything in the Incomplete folder.. i restarted Pro and one more fricking time. i got the error message again .. same exact message posted above. im getting frustrated .. hmmmmm |
'Might' be due to Locale Preferencing. Go to LW's Prefs (under the LW name at top left on screen) & select Advanced & Locale Preferencing. Make sure that the option box is ticked. Otherwise you might be receiving 'other' language data. Why might this have changed suddenly, who knows, you might have accidentally pressed the revert to default. Just a thought. |
In the case this is a Java error (might have gotten corrupt or something), uninstall it the go to www.java.com and dld and re-install. Trash preferences, possibly run Disk utility and restore permissions and try relaunching LW again. |
Preferences checked.. reinstalled java, .. and no luck.. one more thing might help you out with this.. : when i select a file then press download, the bottom half "Downloads" opens as usual then the selected file apears as usual too but then quickly the progress bar shoots up to 100% and finally, the error message apears all within one second. i hope this helps.. |
Have you repaired permissions & run Disk Utility (& any 3rd party if you have them such as DiskWarrior, TechTool, Norton, etc.) See about this: See this link for permissions (click me.) |
i ran Disk utility to repaire permission. and used Cocktail as well. no luck. sorry |
Xcuse me for asking, but where have you located your dwnld folder (ie: path)? Check the folder (cmd+i) & double-check the write permissions.) If preferencing & Java are not the answer/problem then I'm a bit stumped! Do you have the english/international version (this shouldn't make any diff unless you installed the earlier version of Java that comes with the intern'l version. "LimeWire was unable to open the incomplete file for the selected download because the file name contains characters which are not supported by your operating system" I must ask why would it refer to 'opening' the file? My very 1st impression was that it couldn't move it to the dwnld folder for that reason. There must be a reason why the error message refers to 'opening'! When a file has completed dwnlding, then all LW needs to do is 'move' it from the incomplete folder to the dwnld folder. Something doesn't quite add up here. |
the path is correct in the prefs.. the Share folder in external drive.. and so as the Incomplete folder... both paths are correct.. permissions reported no problems.. im stumpd too.. h |
I presume that's a firewire drive. Have you attempted to change (at least temporarily) the LW dwnld folder to your main HDD? I have a suspicion this may lead to an answer. Try this, why not after these probs so far, & post back your results. Even if yu only have a small amount available on yur main hdd, it will at least assist in showing where the issue may lie. |
Is the name of the external drive much "longer" than the boot drive? Could you test to see if the same thing happens if the Shared and Incomplete folders resided on the boot drive, or if the preview works with a very short file name? (some people also had trouble if the external drive was disconnected/reconnected/spun down during a single session) |
actualy, the error messages started appearing when the download folder used to be in the main HD last week. i made the switch to firwire because my main drive was very low on memory and i thought that might be a reason to the problem since i was trying to download a big video clip. anyhow the issue might be somewhere deep os 10.2.8.. should i upgrade to panther?.. would you like me to go back to the main HD?. let me know.. thnx hani |
If the error existed earlier then that's prob'ly not the issue. I 'think' I started using LW 4 before I upgraded to panther. That was amost 6 mths ago. It might solve it, it might not. Have you tried the Beta (LW 4.1.5)? Using the beta has solved 'some' people's probs. |
cool, what should i do first before instaling the beta? |
As LOTR says, if you've already followed Murasame's advice with the clean install on the default volume, then you already know the external drive is not the factor. Still, it would be good to keep it out of the situation until you've nailed this problem. Freeing up space on the boot drive is a good idea (btw--a 10 minute shutdown should clear all the Virtual Memory and also free up space). Panther is good--but sounds like overkill for your problem. Free up some disk space, then create a new user with admin privileges first, and install LW (reg or beta) in that account before you try drastic measures like system reinstalls/major upgrades. cheers |
I'm getting the exact same error when I go to download a file.... any luck yet? Status says "Could not move to library" |
