limewire running dead slow? ive got asdl internet connection, just updated to osx 10.2.8. lime wire now seems to have slowed right down. this is happening on all of the downloads that i try. really annoying me. is this happened to anyone else? thanks for your time timski |
It is happening to many other people but the most common reson is that those other people probably didn't follow any of the tips about configuring and searching. Question is, have you? |
yeah i sure have. i've been using limewire for about a year, and have had no major problems with it. so its puzzling me some what |
Hmm, hmm... How many files are you trying to dld at a time? Also (as LOTR would no doubt say if he came by here) do you have any force resume files? They can consume bandwidth while trying to force resume. |
o.k, ive killed all dwnloads. even deleted all of the incomplete files. still it runs at the pace of a small snail. i have not changed any of my preferences or setting since i first upgraded to the pro version. thanks timski |
don't forget that you can get a reliable check by downloading one of the free files from http://www.magnetmix.com/ Choose one--what kinds of speeds do you get now? |
I agree man limewire downloads slow, connects slows, and even slows down my computer so much i cant do anything else. I found the solution tho go to mac-p2p.com and get poisened it connects you to alot of diffrent peer 2 peer netwoks even kazaa and gnutella. Furthermore it only uses 10% of my comp speed instead of the horrible 80%. I tried pro and its still the same slow thing. Check out my last post about lime wire editted only because i didnt read the rules; This is what i mean by connecting. I have been trying to download ******* and have gotten 2 out of the three disks. I only need 80kb of the last disk but for 5 days it has been telling me it is either connecting or waiting in line position 1. I share alot and by completing those last kb's i would contribute alot especially becuase i have cable internet. Any ideas? Imac 600mz G3 1 gig of ram 40 gig hardrive still waiting, it connects then im back in line. Worse part its only 80kb. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! |
About the 80k thing, I suggest (if I remember right, LOTR suggest the same thing) to run a search for the file. Once you find it (whaever the source, just make sure that there is the little icon on the left of the file is a folder with a green arrow going inside), kill the download and select the file from the search results, then download it again: if done right, the download will pick up from where it left and (hopefully) also download the last remaining kbs. timski, do you follow some of the advice given for maximizing download success? What sources are you trying to dld from? |
I'm having the same problems - Limewire is DEAD SLOW on 1024k cable! I tried downloading from magnetmix.com, but for the last 24 hours it's been awaiting sources, so I couldn't test the speed. The max speed I've seen is 1k !!! I tried logging into mac-p2p.com but nothing comes up, both on IE & Netscape - any ideas ? |
1 Attachment(s) OK--something is throttling your connection to gnutella, because the www.magnetmix.com servers are working OK. |
I can't understand why ? Any ideas ? I'm running OSX 10.2.8 on G3 500Mhz & 384 Ram & using Limewire 4.0.4 Pro. |
Perhaps. First, can you check a couple of benchmarks? 1. Go to http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest and try one of their speed tests. This will tell you your regular Internet connection speed. 2. How do you connect to the internet (equipment like hubs and routers, home ISP/school LAN, etc) 3. In your LimeWire, go to Preferences->Bug Reports->sample bug report and look for "received incoming this session=True (or false). You can email or message me the bug report if you like, since it's too cumbersome to post it here. 4. What happens when you run Jaguar's System Preferences->Software update? cheers |
phuket: My opinion: So you've forced resumed all your files & now they have a status of Awaiting Sources. I'm not surprised your system is working so slow. But then I am surprised it'd happen on cable. If you have numerous amounts of resumed files it puts pressure on the system. It really can make LW work hard. It is continually sending out searches for sources until it gives up. During that time, your files will be continually queued & Waiting #secs for Sources in between each search/connect attempt. Whilst files will normally be queued for a period after you open LW, resumed files will potentially extend the period many more times. In my experience it stresses the search/connect process. Doing it for a no. of files is fine & can be very effective, but not numerous files at once. My suggestion would be to make a list of those files (& their full sizes), then delete them from the dwnld list, search for one & manually select to dwnld again. If no connect success, search again, then delete from list & select from search results again to dwnld. If it can't connect, try another. It might sound painful, but deleting large no.'s of dwnlding files from a list can freshen up LW. Particularly if they're all in that resumed state. Chances are it will be using up a lot cpu energy & ram if they're in the state that you suggested. Clearing them will reduce the strain on LW & your computer. (But don't delete them from the incomplete folder. Unless they're less than 10% dwnlded or something.) Just a suggestion, you don't have to agree. Make sure your java is up to date. OSX's java has a bit of a ram bug. It can have a slowness effect on LW & your comp. Best is to reduce that as much as possible if it's affecting LW's operation & your comp. by using the above suggestion as one approach. |
1. Broadband results 386K/98k 2. Mac connected directly into the cable modem - no routers/networks, etc 3. (sent email) 4. No Java or Limewire updates needed. Only IE & Quicktime updates required. |
Lord of the rings, I tried that and am still having problems with whatever files I try to download, even one at a time. |
Got your email, and your setup looks pretty good (ultrapeer works well). There are a couple of things you can still do. -check that your upload bandwidth is less than 90KB/s (this limits uploads overloading your setup). -turn on Partial File Sharing (this should help when downloading from many sources) -run a safe boot (restart the machine holding down the shift key), run Disk Utility's "repair permissions", and restart normally. Ask/or search the forums for more info/links on this step. Run LW and test the magnet download again. If no change, then -update to the latest beta version (4.1.5) from the link on the bottom of your Pro page (assuming it is still active). If it isn't, just use the regular free version, or the latest open source build from http://www.mager.org/LimeWire/LimeWire.html Better yet, help out the devs and renew the Pro. You show Java version 1.4.1_01 from Apple Computer, Inc, which I guess is the latest for Jag (1.4.2_05 needs OS 10.3.3). Is Panther an option for you? |
Hi Stief, I tried all you said but still no luck. Downloaded the Beta Version too. I'm still getting 0k-1k downloads from Magnetmix. Panther out of the question for the time being. |
I hate to suggest this, but looks like a clean install is the last option. You should be getting far better speeds. Before searching your hard drive and deleting all LimeWire files, there is another option. Create a new user in System Preferences, Accounts (with Admin Privileges), and install LW there. It will be just like installing on a almost new hard drive. Try the download speeds from that account. If there is no difference, the problem is either in your system or upstream of you. (Once done, you can log back into your usual account and delete the one you had just created.) |
Will try - sounds like it make sense to me. Will keep you posted. |
ok, so I set up a new user and restarted. Downloaded a fresh new copy of LW from the LW website at an average speed of 60K. Installed it and ran it. Tried downloading from Magnetmix but download speeds never exceeded 1K. I'm completely lost now. I installed OS X Jag from the original CD. Download speeds from the internet are fine. It must be something with LW ! Aaaarrrrggggghhhhh |
What is the ".DS Store" file in the "Incomplete" section of the "Library window" ? This file does not appear in the actual folder. |
The .ds store is just the settings Jag uses for the folder (icon or list view, window position and size, etc.). Don't worry--delete away. So---the block is upstream of you: you've completely eliminated that it's in your system, and you've tried multiple versions of LimeWire. Those versions work very well for others. Time to talk to your ISP. Tell them what your http (web) speeds are, and ask why connections to the gnutella network on port 6346 are being throttled? They may have a policy regarding p2p filesharing. Ask them if they are using Cisco NBAR or Sandvine filesharing controls. If necessary, get them to do a packet trace and analyze packet loss. If nothing else, this should at least get you beyond 1st level help. Those folks often aren't aware what the network administrators are doing. Grrr--this is such a pain! I wish ISP's would target spam websites as quickly as they hit on filesharing! |
