Default antivirus program ?

Hi - I'm new to P2P not using Limewire yet & but plan to very soon. On Mac OSX is it foolish not to use an antivirus program when downloading files or is that mainly a PC issue? I really don't want to go to the expense of buying one. Can someone recommend a free or cheap one? Sorry if that's just a plain stupid question on a filesharing forum.

Thanks a lot

Salut Beeman, I do not have AV on my mac nor do I recommend one. Spend the money to get music or restaurant! There are no virus known spreading for mac os x at the moment. Plus an AV slows down computers.

Ciao

Great - thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, I had bigtime trouble with Norton AV & ditched it so that's good to know. Sounds like you've got your priorities right.

Many thanks

Default AV? or not AV?

Without wanting to put a spanner in the works, and I agree with Et Voila, about wisely spending cash on food and drink instead. I've got 10.2.8 running Norton AV without any issues. There are a few Mac viruses and trojans out there in cyber world but none to ever get excited about. In my time with Limewire (over a year) Norton has reported a PC Virus and a PC Trojan embedded in shared music files. Ah, those poor PC users. Norton was able to quarantine and delete them. Not that it had the slightest effect on my machine before it did this. It's piece of mind because we're not talking about just Limewire. We're talking about anything you install on your mac that is not via the 'software update' utility.

In over 10 yrs of using a mac I've only seen 2 mac viruses & both came from other students, not from the net. These were early mac viruses (yrs old.) I also use Norton AV, to be on the safe side (I only installed it after the 1st virus.) But in general, I think it's a waste of time. To reiterate, I've never received a mac virus over the net.
