Default G5 USB broadband modem

Hi,

I don't know if this is related to the 10.3.6 issue, but Limewire gets stuck sometimes in a download and then the modem ceases to work at all and will not disconnect.

The only way I can deal with it is to select another Network connection and apply (modem finally appears to disconnect - if I switch it back it is still trying to disconnect) then shut-down (restart won't work) start up and call up the old network preference and re-connect. Then it seems to recover. This problem only happens with Limewire.

Any ideas/help, etc.?

there were problems in the past with USB modems having trouble handling the number of connections needed by LimeWire.

If you can switch to an ethernet modem you should have far fewer problems. Most reputable broadband modems also have an ethernet port.

Reducing the number of connections is a poor workaround (fewer simultaneous downloads, uploads, and Ultrapeer capability disabled).

I was told by my isp they didn't recommend usb modems for mac. They'd heard of too many problems. (Certainly not for pre-G5 macs I suspect.)

I'm having the exact same problems, running mac G5 OSX10.3.4 with a usb modem. The strange part is sometimes it will work fine for hours on end and at other times I'll be lkucky if it stays connected for 10 minutes before the connection goes dead and won't disconnect. I've found no solution apart from resetting the machine and crossing my fingers. At least now I know it's not just my mac...

I don't have a usb modem but if I have problems 1st thing is to reset the modem (which for mine is either accessing it via the browser or else disconnecting the power for a few mins.) At worst I'll disconnect the modem & reboot the computer. Modems can apparently stop talking to the computer. But then I often run so many apps at he same time doing heavy duty processing it's no wonder. I process graphics & video mainly.
