limewire causing windows media player to become nonfunctiona Hi all-- I downloaded WMV for mac os x 9.0 for my powerbook. Had no problem playing local files or streaming embedded content. After downloading limewire, my WMV becomes nonfunctional. When tried to open previously usable contents,I get the error message: "the specified stream type is not recognized." Embedded contents give "cannot create unique tmp files." any suggestions? I tried repairing disk permission and reinstalling wmv and rebooting...but still make o progress :( |
Hi, I had the same problem so I stopped downloading windows media files. I'm trying to delete the files I don't use anymore and I can't delete the wmv files, from the lime wire library. I'd appreciate any help with that. |
barkmoss you can't delete the files b/c they were being shared. You will 1st need to close LW. As for WMV for mac. yerk!!! My WMP works fine xcept too many files don't have the appropriate codecs to play on a mac. doh! Typical M$! They wouldn't think about that would they! WMV files IMHO are not worth the effort. Due to their DRM or whatever it's called allows for viruses, spyware, spamware, & links to advertising sites. Just for WMA see: Doh #1 mistake by W$ , & then Doh mistake #2 & that's only wma. wmv is equivalent. What's more wmv quality ain't that great anyway. If you really need to play wmv files, use VLC (a free player that has inbuilt codecs & plays everything xcept the odd wmv file): http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (choose the nearest mirror site.) M$ rarely update anything that's for the mac (xcept Office). That's how deep they think about wmp issues for mac users. (skating on the thin ice of the new day.) Typical Windows error problems; 'new' error list just come to light: Doh! lol :D |
Yeah I'm really glad I have a Mac. I don't miss Windows, one little bit. I did try disconnecting and then deleting the wmv files, but that didn't work. An error message appears. I was able to delete other types of files that way though. |
barkmoss do you have LW set to start on computer startup? If yes this might be the reason (LW Prefs>Advanced>System Startup) 1. Else hold down the Option key whilst you empty the Trash. This will force the items to be trashed even if they are locked (unless they're being used by the system.) 2. The other alternatives are to take out of trash & then startup in os9 if you have it, & trash them that way. 3. Else startup using your mac startup disk. Then delete them. 4. Else put them into a folder, & move items with the same name & drop into that folder to replace them. 5. Go to the files info (select & apple & i keys, change permissions to you & make sure they are read & write & not locked. Then try the above techniques. |
