Can't Quit I've read a couple of other threads regarding being forced to "Force Quit" Limewire, and I've gone and did that thing with Permissions with the Utilities but it still doesn't quit. After each session, I 'update' my saved files to iTunes and the library windows then become empty. I also delete all the files in the incomplete folder. I update that, too...a couple of times because sometimes it keeps finding a couple of scattered files. I delete all the files that have not loaded from the search window, too, trying to clear everything out. Nothing. Nada. Won't quit. Updating permissions didn't seem to work. When I reboot, all the files I thought I deleted were still there and I have to delete them again. If I delete them, how come they're still there? (Aarrrggghhhhhhhhhhh!) Any other suggestions? It's beyond frustrating at this point. Thanks. |

Lord, First, the preliminaries I should have mentioned earlier: eMac 1.0 gHz, 356MB, OSX 10.3.6; LW 4.2 6, DSL connection 225KB +/- sec down and 28KB+/- sec up. I do have iTunes import enabled so I know that they will be imported, (I play them almost immediately so I know they're there) but I click update to clear the library and to make things clean (I guess). Actually, everything clears except for a red file called ".DS_Store" about 6KB. What is that, by the way? Also, what are red incomplete files? Corrupted? I am NOT an Ultrapeer - it is disabled. My Auto-clear is checked and shutdown is immediate (I clicked 'apply' when I made the change a while ago.) I do not allow partial file sharing. It's been unticked for a couple of weeks. Regarding sharing, or shared folders, where someone might be trying to upload them as you mentioned, the only place I have in my preferences for sharing is my iTunes folder, and I usually check the 'Monitor' window to see if anyone's uploading. Out of courtesy, I wait until no one's uploading and then I quit...or attempt to quit, and yes, I do know how to force quit in OSX. because that's how I have to get out of LimeWire. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks and regards, Grantmann |

Dare I suggest it but it 'might' be a ram issue. There's no need to continually Refresh LW. Doing so will use up LW's resources. Incomplete files in red, see here: Library items in Red For normal files it means they're not being shared. You may notice if you open LW & immediately go to your Library window that all your shared files will be in red. After LW has loaded & accounted for them all they will turn to black one by one. Refreshing LW will repeat this process. The plus side to it is that new files will be counted as being shareable. The negative side is that it uses too much of LW's resources doing so. With only 356 RAM I'd be a little concerned. Are you sure that's 356 & not 256 MB RAM? My LW can use up to 500 MB of ram if it's been running for a long time. I try to minimise this by closing all windows I'm not using at that time (eg: library, monitor, connections windows, etc. by going to View>Hide.) I also hide LW in the background when I'm not attending to it. I also delete old search results. LW also uses up Virtual Memory (VM) - as do all OSX apps - which is where memory is temporarily stored on the HDD. You can monitor how much ram & VM LW & other apps are using by opening the Activity Monitor found in the utilities folder. I think OS 10.2 has the monitor window. If not it'll be something similar. Every mac osx folder has a .DS_Store file which is invisible. It keeps a record of such things as folder settings, etc. |

Good morning LOTR, First, my RAM is 384, not 356...sorry. I took your advice and closed all the windows, still no change. I delete all the incomplete files to make room "somewhere." I find that after I delete them, a while later they come back. It's like Limewire doesn't really delete them but keeps them in a little closet over in that corner of the hard drive just out of reach! (I am guilty of updating, I'm just trying to get all the incomplete files out of the system). Today, I literally had to delete one file at least 4, maybe 5 times. Then I tried to quit. Had to force again. When I rebooted, every file I deleted was back in the search/download window! Upon rebooting, I 'stop' downloading these files again, go to the library and delete them again. Then quit. After this, it quits normally. This is a little coo-coo. I think what is happening is the incomplete files don't really get deleted when I click delete; they remain in LW's memory, and when I try to quit, LW gets 'confused.' OK, I made that last part up. But that's the pattern. Does any of it make sense? |

I wonder if your LW downld preferences are corrupt!?! These are the files called download.dat & bak in your incomplete folder. If you're starting from scratch, you could do what you do with deleting from downld list, then clearing them from the incomplete folder in the LW Library window & then close LW. Then check to see if they're there after you've gone to physically look at the incomplete folder itself. If yes, then only the downld.dat & bak files should be there. Delete these! trash them! Then open LW up again. LW will create new ones when you start to downld again. According to the developer, it's ok to close LW & go to the incomplete folder & delete/trash the incompletes you don't want. I'm a bit wary of this though in case it corrupts the downld.dat downld preferences. Run your computer over with Disk Utility to make sure there's no directory damage. You may need to start from the OSX startup disk to do this. |

OK. I opened LW, started downloading two tunes, stopped them, went to the incomplete folder and deleted them. I then quit (not closed, just want to make sure my terminology is clear). LW quit fine with these two deleted files. However, when I went back to the Library to look at the incomplete folder, there was no downld.dat nor .bak files at all. I then searched my computer for a 'incomplete folder' and found it in iTunes. The .dat and .bak files were there. I deleted them, rebooted LW and new files were generated. (By the way, are the .dat & .bak files supposed to show up in LW's incomplete folder or just the actual folder itself in my iTunes folder?) Maybe the test with only two tunes doesn't confuse LW. Later on I'll check it again with more incomplete files as has been my habit. Perhaps it's only the corrupted preferences as suggested; perhaps many files will continue to 'confuse' it. Stay tuned... Oh yeah, one other issue I noticed earlier this morning regarding the Quality/sharing bars at the bottom: LW would *stop* sharing, go back to 0, and then start sharing again. Have you ever seen that before? I appreciate the continuing help. Grantmann |

The only way an incomplete folder could have ended up in iTunes folder (that I can think of) is that at some time you've set the iTunes library as the LW downld location. Not a good idea! iTunes will copy all songs automatically once they've been downlded if you set LW's preferences to do that. |

Yes, I put my LW downloads in my iTunes...I thought it made sense. Why do you say it's not a good thing? And then, if that's true, where do you suggest I then move it (them)? (Remember, Mac OSX, not windows) Won't I then have the twice as many files and therefore take up twice as much disk space? One file in a LW shared file, the other in iTunes? Going back to the original topic, I again had to force quit. I downloaded about 20 songs, cleared the incomplete and then it hung again. Looks like the recreation of the preferences didn't work. Dang. @#$$%@#!!!!! Any other suggestions? Grantmann |

Don't know but I have a suspicion that the iTunes library is a little sacred. Don't quote me on that!!! Yes if you choose to auto import the songs into iTunes you will have 2 copies. That's not an issue for most people. Some use those in the LW Downld folder as a backup to copy to a storage medium. Some people just trash them. You have the option to manually add them to iTunes. See these: 1. http://www.kapsi.de/files/itunes.html & 2. http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/tutorial/index.html Whilst you're having these problems I would advise you set your downld folder elsewhere. Set up a LW folder in your user directory: eg: /Users/your_username/limewire/LW downld folder. Personally I save my files to a different partition/HDD. I'd also suggest you don't use too many other apps at the same time as LW. Keep using my initial suggestions about minimising ram use. And don't resume all your files to get them started. That can play havoc with LW. Also let LW settle before doing anything with it. Tell us how you get on. |
