Default Uploading problems

Hi,

I'm the only Mac (OSX10.3.8) on a wireless network also consisting of 2 PCs (XP) and a system box (also XP) that the network uses for storage. Connected to the internet via DSL 2MB broadband, with a *new* NAT router. I'm the only Limewire user (Pro 4.6.0). I don't use the firewall on my Mac.

I seem to be struggling with "need more sources" messages. Also, I've noticed that many of the uploads from my files seem to fail (about 70%).

I've done some research here, but am uncertain what is wrong. The NAT router seems suspect, although it supports UPnP, I've also configured the port (6346) in L/W manually, but this has made no difference. I did the Bug Report and Received Incoming This Session is False which suggests a firewall problem - router??? I've done the test to make sure my ISP isn't blocking anything, and that was also okay.

Any suggestions welcome or a pointer in the direction of where I can do some reading to learn to solve my own problem. Don't mean to be lazy....I have tried.

Cheers!

Thanks :-)

"The test page was a success"...presumably this means the port isn't blocked by my router? Yet the Bug Report in L/W prefs is still showing "false."

Off to do some more reading on the subject, but any pointers in the right direction appreciated.

LW's firewall setting for a UPnP capable nat router should be set to UPnP for ease (so you don't need to manually forward a port on your modem/router.) Otherwise yes you can manually configure your devices to allow port 6346.

I do believe there is a bug in LW 4.6 with UPnP (see: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=34327 but don't know if that applies to you.) LW 4.8 has been released but don't know if it's solved the problem yet due to the history page not being updated yet.

Many thanks.

I've done quite a bit of reading today regarding NAT and have even read the instruction manual for my router (!), but to no avail. I've tried using UPnP and not, also forwarding the port in my router.

Interestingly, the router log shows blocked requests to port 6346 which would support the "false" reading in the Bug Report.

At the moment I'm a DMZ - something else I've learnt - which I hope (correctly?) shouldn''t fill me with dread since I'm using a Mac.

Thanks for the 'heads up' regarding 4.8....I have it downloaded now, after figuring out that I actually WAS downloading 4.8 and not the stated 4.6. Doh!

Yeah LW's very slow to update their pages. I can't even tell you what changes they've made at this point. So I don't know whether they've fixed UPnP or not. Though they've probably at least fixed one of the issues but perhaps not for lan yet. What is your brand & model of modem-router?

It's a Safecom SWBRU-54108 *ducking* :-)

Yes, I know....I've found out today that it and others of its ilk (chipset), are the horse and cart end of the router market. But, THEN, I didn't know anything about routers and now I know loads (lol) even for a girl. Anyway...not much use for P2P or gaming, although I'm not exactly sure why.

I'm using L/W 4.8, I'm a DMZ, no local firewall, yet I'm still receiving "false" incomings. Downloading fine...only received one upload so far, which failed. I'll see how it goes, but it looks very much as if I'm destined to be a freeloader by default :-(

Did you set up a Static ip?

As far as Need More Sources goes, if the search results are up there, then I 1st try to stop the downld & then reselect from the search results. I may back this up with an occasional new search. If the search results are still up there, I may also resume them. Both of these may work. I prefer to leave Resume function as last choice.

Good point and something I thought about. I didn't set-up a static IP because I use Mac filtering and thus my IP address remains the same and doesn't expire.

Of course, these are the thoughts of a newbie to wireless networking and perhaps the reality is different?!

OK this is a different brand of modem but I wonder if the same applies: http://www.usr.com/support/doc-popup...es/rtr-faq.htm (half-way down page.) I don't know about DMZ other than what it means & stands for, nor do I know about mac filtering.

I found this which gives some good overall descriptons: http://www.networkeverywhere.com/sup...tersupport.asp

More results HERE!
