LW 4.6.0 constantly quits unexpectedly

LW v4.4.0 works great on OS 10.3.8 on my G4 powerbook. I was able to leave it on overnight to complete downloads. However, since I upgraded to the latest version v4.6.0, LW cannot stay open and be left alone for more than an hour. It constantly quits unexpectedly. The setting on my Powerbook has not changed! It did not matter whether I was running something else at the same time or not. Instead, it seems to definitely crash if it is the only program open and the computer is left alone. I tried changing my engery saver options so that the computer does not go to sleep at all, but it still crashes regardless.

Does anyone else encounter a similar problem or have a solution to it? Is this a bug in the latest v4.6.0?

Try a SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions Also delete some of your older incompletes (if you have any older ones) that are 0%. You should do this in both the downld window (click the top of Status bar to arrange with 0% at top or bottom of list), & also th incomplete folder (easiest when LW is closed & arrange the folder by size.) This should help to reduce some of the stress on LW. Also set your downlds for autocomplete & close all windows you're not using. Also hide LW in the dock when you're not in front of comp.

LimeWire still quits unexpectedly

Hi,
I went thru repairing the permissions as mentioned, even run a who disk repair, then deleted all the incomplete files that are 0%. But LimeWire still quits unexpectedly. Only it now stays open for 2 hours instead of 1 :(

Is there any other solution to this? I am just waiting to finish downloading my incomplete files and maybe reinstalling LimeWire. Will I lost my incomplete files if I reinstall LimeWire now?

Thanks!

Lord of the Rings March 2nd, 2005 08:09 AM

Reinstallling LW for mac means you can install over the top of the previous version or just drag the previous LW folder to the trash. The incomplete files' preferences are stored in files called download.dat & bak & are found in the incomplete folder. So just leave your LW preferences as are, leave the LW downld folder & incomplete folder as are & you can re-install.

How much ram do you have by the way? And how much spare HDD space do you have? I wonder if that's related to your problem.

If you have same problems after re-installing, then try deleting LW's Preferences folder (whilst LW is closed) found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

LW still quits

well, i tried all possibilities recommended. upgraded to LW 4.8.1. and it still quits after 2 hours. there are no more incompleted files that is 0%. premissions are regularly checked and repaired. i run my hardware utility test. everything is ok with the computer. i have 1 GB RAM. 15 GB HD left. Is the problem too little HD? it shouldn't be as LW had worked before.

Is there any other tips on what i can do to stop LW from quiting every 2 hours?

If a file is waiting in line, i never get to complete my download becos LW would crash and I would lost my position :(

Thanks in advance for any help!!

gwentan March 17th, 2005 01:28 AM

oh, i forgot to mention that i did close LW and toss the preference. Then restart it clean.

stief March 17th, 2005 04:32 AM

how many incomplete files?

Also, OS X logs errors (and gives more details on the crash). If you run Console (it's in your Applications -> Utilities folder you'll see the error details the next time it happens

gwentan March 17th, 2005 05:26 AM

usually 20 to 30 incomplete files. never more than that.

what is reported in the console?
this is what i have. i didnät understand anzthing from it.

oops. i believe only the first line saying "crash report submitted" relates to the issue of LW crashing. no other things was log. the rest are from the video app. i was using.

as a matter of fact, LW crashes no matter the computer is left alone without any other running program, or with 5 other programs crunching at the same time.

any other help?

Lord of the Rings March 17th, 2005 06:14 AM

Stief must have temporarily left the scene. From that report it looks like a movie issue. mpeg4 problem. Perhaps not compatible plug-in/codec.

Do you have any LW crash logs that have been saved? Go to OSX>User name>Library>Logs (& possibly CrashReporter folder)

gwentan March 17th, 2005 07:13 AM

i have a crash report. it is really long and i am not able to paste the whole thing here, just a sample of it. what is a kern protection failure?

plus a really long code to follow. is it s java problem? should i reinstall my Java?

thanks so much for reading along with my problem.

Lord of the Rings March 17th, 2005 08:00 AM

Very well picked up! ;) :) Sometimes the standalone java installer fixes some of these types of errors. Get it here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...update142.html

Also do a SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions

gwentan March 17th, 2005 08:25 AM

a really silly question to ask: i search around the forum, no one explained in a way (that i can understand) how i should "reinstall" my java. i downloaded the supposed standalone installer. no matter what i do, the installer tells me that my computer already has it (1.4.2) and i have no other choices but to quit out. does anyone mind explaining in layman terms the steps to this?

thanks a zillion!

Lord of the Rings March 17th, 2005 08:38 AM

Not a silly question! Go to your OSX Library folder>Receipts & view in list mode. Then scroll down to Java142Update2.pkg & remove it. This should then allow you to use the standalone installer. ;) :)

rkapsi March 17th, 2005 08:53 AM

Delete the following file /Library/Receipts/Java142Update2.pkg and try it again.

Note: Apple's Hardware Test CD/DVD is inaccurate. Do applications (LimeWire and other) sometimes crash immediately (i.e. application X crashes, you launch it and it crashes immediately again)?

gwentan March 17th, 2005 10:01 AM

i deleted the receipt and try to reinstall and it still tells me that my computer does not need it.

i fixed the permission again and try to reinstall and still doesn't work. i read in apple's forum that i may have to reinstall my OSX to fix this problem? I hope that will not be the case.

gwentan March 17th, 2005 10:04 AM

oops, sorry, i didn't answer the question about X crashing. No, nothing crashes. the computer works fine. It is a new computer, only 3 months old. Everything is still more or less in optimal condition. Only LW crashes unexpectedly about every 2 hours. I actually made a log, it had not been able to last over 2 hours at all!

Lord of the Rings March 17th, 2005 10:15 AM

In that case, delete all the LW receipts of Java. Reboot. Another suggestion which might seem a little painful is to install the combo 10.3.8 installation. See http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...1038combo.html which is another solution to these types of issues.

Can you give us a description about your machine:
1. RAM
2. HDD available
3. model
4. Connection type
5. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?

gwentan March 17th, 2005 12:13 PM

powerbook g4 1.5MHz
1 GB RAM
80 GB HD (15 GB Free)
DSL over wireless connection thru an Airport Extreme Station. The Airport is connected to a DSL Modem/Router (Brand unknown)

gwentan March 17th, 2005 12:14 PM

how do i delete all LW receipts of Java?

gwentan March 17th, 2005 12:16 PM

sorry for posting all these separately. i am already running 10.3.8. should i be reintsalling it?

Lord of the Rings March 17th, 2005 01:36 PM

Yes! As far as Java goes, yes delete all receipts the same way as the 1st. If you return to the receipts folder you'll probably see other java versions listed. (Easy if you have it viewed in LIST mode.) The idea of installing using Standalone installers is that mac installation 'over the net' has been known (relatively common) for unsatisfactory installations. Installing directly from your computer & installing all updates in one hit seems to overcome a lot of hicups of installation. I assure you this has fixed many a person's problem. The reason I refered to it as a pain is due to the installer's size to download. If this doesn't fix your problem, then I'd suggest you redo the java installation & if that doesn't work, it's up to Stief (perhaps setting LW up in a different user account.)

gwentan March 17th, 2005 10:53 PM

i have only 2 receipts of Java in the receipts folder. I deleted both but still cannot reinstall Java. But I did manage to reinstall 10.3.8 combo. That helps a little. now LW quit after 6 hours. so I suspect that there is still something wrong with my Java. Any other hint on how I can reinstall my Java?

is it possible to transfer my incomplete files to another computer to continue downloading? i have not mess up the Java on my desktop G3 yet ;)

Lord of the Rings March 18th, 2005 02:33 AM

You can yes. What's important is the incomplete folder. It should remain intact. The most important files within are the download.dat & .bak files b/c these are the preferences to all your incomplete downlds. Keep these within that folder & you should be able to continue them on the G3. So just the incomplete folder is all you need to copy across. A fresh installation of LW & replace the new incomplete folder with the one from your other computer but only do this swapping whilst LW is closed!
