Question mac keeps on crashing

hi this keeps on happening for no apparent reason my mac will freeze up and i will have to reset the machine. also sometimes what ever app im using it quits. ive ahd the memory upgraded and am now running on 768 mb memory and a 1ghz processor. ive used disk utilities to try and sort this out, but it keeps on happening. any clues, oh and it mainly seems to crash on limewire but quit out of everything.
using osx 10.2.8 is it worth updating to panther?
many thanks
