My two macs don't have any problems with LW and os x 10.3.9. reinstall java security update http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300980

If that doesn't work the other possibility to fix the problem is to download and install the 10.3 -> 10.3.9 combo update http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...pdate1039.html

bonne chance ;)

stief April 16th, 2005 07:26 AM

LW runs fine after the 10.3.9 update here. Hope the combo works to repaor the java problem.

-Guest: Tom in US- April 16th, 2005 07:45 AM

I, too, am having a problem launching LW after installing the updates. Interestingly, I found that if I attempted to double-click the file "limewire.plist" in the ~/library/preferences folder, it launched iTunes.

I'll try some of the suggestions I've seen posted.

Thanks!
Tom

Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 checksum error

Just downloaded the combined update. When trying to mount the disk image, it reports a checksum error.

et voilà April 16th, 2005 08:04 AM

begin with the security update, many forums reported that it worked.

MacFixit reports that the 10.3.9 update breaks Java and suggests a workaround:

http://www.macfixit.com/

Quote:

Broken Java A number of readers are reporting that Java applets cause Safari to crash after updating to Mac OS X 10.3.9. This problem can generally be worked around by re-installing the most recent Java updater (Java 1.4.2 Update 2).

However, for many users, the Java update installer refuses to do its job because -- for some reason -- it does not recognize that there is an installed version of Java to be updated.

As noted by one MacFixIt reader:

"Java programs don't work (under Mac OS X 10.3.9). Typing 'java -version' in Terminal gives a segmentation fault. Trying to reinstall Java 1.4.2 v2 doesn't work, as it doesn't recognize that the installed version of Java can be upgraded."

Luckily, there is a workaround for this issue. Though the Java update installer refuses to properly place components, you can use a utility like unpkg to extract the various parts of the Java 1.4.2 update 2 package, and drag and drop the components to their appropriate locations.

MacFixIt reader Josh Camp writes:

"I was having the same problem as everyone else, any time safari try's to load a java applet it would crash Safari. The way I got around it was to reinstall the java142update2. Of course the installer would not let me so I used a free app called unpkg which unpacked it to my desktop. I then just did the drag and drop thing, and just like that Safari works with Java applets again. "

In order to perform this workaround, first download unpkg. Next download the Java 1.4.2 Update 2. Drag the file Java142Update2.pkg -- which now should be located on the mounted Java 1.4.2 Update 2 disk image -- onto the unpkg icon.

The files contained in the package will now be located on your desktop in a folder named Java142Update2. The files in this folder will be organized according to where they should be placed on your startup volume. For instance, you will see a Library folder, within which you will find folders named "Internet Plug-Ins" and "Java." Drag the individual files located in these folders to the to the folders /Library/Internet Plug-Ins and /Library/Java respectively.

When performing these procedure, copy at the file level only. In other words, do not attempt to copy an entire folder (e.g. the "Library" folder located in the Java142Update2 folder) or vital components may be deleted. You can drag multiple individual files simultaneously, but do not attempt to replace entire folders.

et voilà April 16th, 2005 08:08 AM

I know that solution, but installing the security update is much faster and easier, try it!

stief April 16th, 2005 08:17 AM

Aha! Thanks for the info Tom. Should be handy for those, like http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36368 whose java was already broken. Looks like for others a bad java was revealed by 10.3.9.

Tried that, et voilà, but the security update won't install on my HD. When I attempted to do so, the installer said that my drive didn't include any software that needed updating.

I had to manually unpack the Java and install the components manually.

Merci, mon ami!

Limewire won't work with OS 10.3.9

I find the same problem. Limewire icon bounces a few times and ...nothing. I am guessing the new security updates are doing some port blocking?
Is anyone working on this? What will Tiger do to Limewire?

sberlin April 18th, 2005 06:36 AM

Call your local Apple support hotline and ask them for instructions on how to fix Java. The recent update to 10.3.9 broke Java, again, like almost every earlier update. It's easy enough to fix, but they continue to release updates that break it. If enough people complain, then maybe they'll start taking Java seriously.

jibe April 18th, 2005 11:18 AM

Is it a joke ?

In anno domini 2005, there is no reason to call (at which cost ?) an Apple hotline who is always useless, being maintained by students reading prefabricated notices, nor to disassemble a java installer to place manually its elements.

But it seems it's not entirely the Apple fault : other programs, such edonkey 2000, are running wthout any problem.

sberlin April 18th, 2005 11:23 AM

It is 100% Apple's fault. They broke the language that LimeWire requires to run. They've done it before, they'll do it again, unless people call and complain. There's no need to disamble anything. You just need to download and install the security update manually. Their Software Update doesn't work right. Call Apple and complain that they're breaking your computer.

jibe April 18th, 2005 11:31 AM

Sorry for the incrimination, I have not the source code !

BUT I have downloaded the java update and intalled it manually and... NOTHING.

Nota : I am french, using a french MacOsX, and there is NO french Java update.

et voilà April 18th, 2005 01:20 PM

Jibe: cela n'a pas d'importance que ton os x soit en français, toutes les mises à jour apple sont multilingues / doesn't matter that your os x isn't english, the apple updates apply on all language os x systems

Ciao ;)

Limewire Tech has confirmed the problem is a Java security update. The link is below.

"Please download the latest Java Security update:

:)

jibe April 19th, 2005 02:08 AM

Good !

Finally, of all the remedies, the only one which is efficient for me, has been to repair the authorizations, then to download and execute only this security update (and no other one) :

http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/np...005-002Pan.dmg

Thanks to all !

It's true. I did this and it worked great. Just follow the link, manually download the update, go through the installer, and restart your computer. Works great now.

Limewire Still Doesn't Connect

I had been using 4.0.8 Pro and don't use it very often. When I tried to start it the other day, it wouldn't. I have read all the posts concerning the problems with 3.9 and Java. I have installed all the Apple updates and restarted several times. I switched to the latest free version of Limewire. Now it opens but can't connect. Are there possibly some System preferences that should be set to accomodate Limewire, although I never had to worry about that in the past? Thanks.

verdyp April 22nd, 2005 03:47 PM

It's the Apple fault: Java on MacOSX is made and supported only by Apple, and this port of Java is a standard part of OSX.

So it's up to Apple to fix the installers for the updates of its own OS. The fact that other apps work without such problem is that these apps don't use Java.

(But note: Safari needs Java on MacOSX and Safari is now the default browser for MacOSX; I don't think that Apple will consider that upgrading Java incorrectly and breaking Safari is not an important problem. Can Apple seriously think about OSX without a working browser?)

stief April 22nd, 2005 03:54 PM

Today Apple released an official fix.

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...acosx1039.html

Use Software Update to install, or the link to the standalone installer is also provided.

There is also a link to the more technical details of what went wrong (FYI Philippe)
Quote:

To reduce the memory footprint of Java applications, the HotSpot Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in Mac OS X makes use of a Java Shared Archive (JSA). The JSA contains the preprocessed internal HotSpot JVM representations of common standard Java classes that would otherwise be found and processed from the standard classes.jar file. Mac OS X 10.3.9 has exposed an issue in the use of the JSA, by which the virtual memory location of libhotspot.dylib can become incompatible with the current JSA. This can result in Java crashing on every execution.

verdyp April 22nd, 2005 03:57 PM

Thanks for the technical quote...

Still Can't Connect

As I said earlier, I have done all the updates, and have done them several times. I have deleted preferences, restarted, and still can't connect.

Nick Jahn April 23rd, 2005 10:54 PM

Now can connect

All of a sudden, Limewire did connect. Something finally worked.

I finally resorted to this. Mama Mia, what a pain! You have to change permissions add nauseam to move things into place. A small shortcut I found is to check the info on each folder containing things you are considering moving first and compare it with the equivalent old one with things to be replaced. If they are the same, skipping them saves time, and mine is working.

The other things (SecUpd2005-002, JavaUpdateforMacOSXv10.3.9) got me able to launch Limewire again, but after time it always became too unresponsive

After further testing, Limewire Pro 4.8.1 is obviously still unresponsive after time, but definitely seems less so and I am getting quite a bit more downloads. For me it was probably worth it despite the extraordinary bother, but still has not really solved the problem.

OminousFerret May 21st, 2005 09:28 AM

i have a powermac g4 dual 1.25ghz proccessors and im running 10.3.9

Ok, now i have tried everything in this thread and related to this thread... java isnt broken (i dont think) because when i go into terminal and type java -version i get this

java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)

i then got both security updates and restarted my computer and limewire still wont work... i then deleted limewire and all of its components and reinstalled it... limewire is still not working.

the exact problem with limewire is when i open it up, i get the "please wait while limewire initializes" and it closes by itself... no "Unexpectedly quit" screen pops up or anything.

if someone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.
